Dalton Zongshian Lu

Dalton, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hello, I’m Dalton Zongshian Lu, a passionate storyteller and a seasoned director/producer nurtured in the vibrant culture of Taiwan. My journey began with a fascination for film, sparked at age 13 by a movie that deeply resonated with themes of resilience, hope, and justice. Today, I’m proud of my evolution beyond the conventional realms of Hollywood.

In 2019, I made a significant leap by moving to the United States to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at the prestigious USC School of Cinematic Arts, a dream since my early teens. My professional journey started as a Camera Assistant at Shadow Magic Film Co., Ltd., where I developed a keen eye for visual storytelling. This role laid the foundation for my ascent into the world of commercial work as a First Assistant Director, working with clients like China Southern Airlines and INOHERB.

My expertise blossomed into directing commercials and documentaries, drawn to the depth of long-form storytelling. At USC, I embraced collaboration and learning, realizing that film thrives on teamwork. My projects, from producing “Anywhere the Wind Blows” to “A Better Place,” reflect my commitment to addressing critical social issues like mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration. My objective is to illuminate humanity’s overlooked aspects and foster meaningful dialogue.

As a freelancer, I’ve specialized in commercials, short films, music videos, and documentaries since 2013, bringing creative concepts to life for clients like ViewSonic and PSA. My experience encompasses diverse roles, from managing advertising projects for Jeep to aligning script vision as an Executive Producer.

This journey cements my belief in storytelling as a medium for social change. I am dedicated to producing and directing films that not only entertain but also educate and inspire deeper connections with the world. Join me in exploring the vast spectrum of human experiences through the transformative power of film.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path in filmmaking has been marked by a series of deeply personal challenges, each shaping the director I am today. Tackling commercial projects, I often found myself at the crossroads of artistic integrity and commercial demands. These experiences were tough but invaluable, teaching me to navigate the complex terrain where creativity meets marketability.

In creating short films, I faced a different kind of test. The challenge was to distill vast emotions and stories into brief yet powerful narratives. This taught me the art of precision and the power of a single moment, skills that have become fundamental in all my work.

Above all, my commitment to authenticity has been the most challenging yet rewarding aspect. Striving to tell stories that are not just relatable but real, I’ve often walked a tightrope between raw honesty and narrative coherence. This pursuit has taken me down roads less traveled, exploring themes and characters that challenge both the viewer and myself.

Balancing my career with personal commitments has also been a tightrope walk. Juggling the demands of filmmaking with personal life has taught me not just time management but also the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. It’s a continuous learning process, one that keeps me grounded and focused.

These challenges have been more than just hurdles; they’ve been my teachers, guiding me toward a deeper understanding of my craft and myself. Each project has been a step forward in my journey, not just as a filmmaker but as an individual seeking to make a meaningful impact through cinema. In embracing every challenge, I’ve found not just solutions but also a greater sense of purpose and connection to my work and to the audiences who engage with it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the heart of my cinematic journey lies a unique fusion of my undergraduate major in psychology and a penchant for dark humor. This combination not only defines my style but also guides the narratives I choose to bring to life through film. As a director, my work is characterized by its thematic diversity and depth, tackling complex issues with a nuanced lens.

One of my earlier works, “Carousal,” delved into the intricate dynamics of maternal authority, exploring the psychological undercurrents of familial relationships. In contrast, “It’s a Free Country” presented a bold contemplation of a world bereft of gun control, a theme that resonates with the contemporary pulse of society. These films, along with “Who’s Going to Press the Button?” reflect my commitment to addressing challenging subjects with sensitivity and insight.

Particularly noteworthy is “Black Cloud,” a film that not only provides a poignant portrayal of postpartum depression but also delicately explores the relationship dynamics of a lesbian couple navigating these challenges. This film exemplifies my dedication to depicting diverse and often underrepresented stories, bringing to light the complexities of human relationships and mental health issues.

My portfolio also boasts commercial success. I’ve directed projects for ViewSonic, known for their visual technology, and crafted an animated PSA (Passive System Alliance) title sequence that demonstrates my versatility and creative range. Additionally, my work in “Kurotani Washi” and the “A.Heritage Art Museum” showcases my ability to blend artistic vision with storytelling, highlighting cultural and historical narratives.

Beyond directing, my passion extends to producing impactful films. “Anywhere the Wind Blows” and “A Better Place” are testaments to this commitment, focusing on LGBTQ+ rights and immigration issues, respectively. These films are more than just stories; they are platforms that illuminate humanity, provoke dialogue, and advocate for change.

My journey in the world of film has solidified my belief in the power of storytelling as a catalyst for social change. It’s not just about creating films; it’s about crafting experiences that entertain, educate, and inspire. Through my work, I strive to forge deeper connections with the world, offering audiences the opportunity to explore the myriad human experiences through the compelling lens of cinema.

This journey is an ongoing exploration into the layers of human emotion and thought, utilizing the powerful medium of film to spark conversations, challenge perspectives, and, ultimately, drive transformation in our society.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Throughout my career in film, the most pivotal lesson I’ve learned is the incredible importance of collaboration and the enriching power of diversity in crafting authentic stories. This realization has been a guiding force in my work, from the nuanced explorations in “Black Cloud” to the complex familial dynamics in “Carousal.”

In “Black Cloud,” a film that delves into the emotional landscapes of a lesbian couple grappling with postpartum depression, the collaboration with a diverse cast and crew was instrumental. It brought depth and authenticity to the story, enabling us to portray the characters’ experiences in a way that was both true to life and deeply resonant with the audience. The varied perspectives and personal insights of the team enriched the narrative, highlighting the importance of representation and empathy in storytelling.

Similarly, “Carousal,” which explores maternal authority and psychological intricacies within family structures, benefitted immensely from a collaborative approach. The diversity of thoughts and backgrounds among the team members brought a multitude of layers to the story, allowing us to explore these themes with a richness and authenticity that would have been impossible in isolation.

These experiences have taught me that the heart of great filmmaking lies in the collective effort. It is in the coming together of different voices, each contributing their unique experiences and viewpoints that a story truly comes to life. This diversity not only enhances the creative process but also ensures that the stories we tell are reflective of the diverse world we live in.

Therefore, embracing collaboration and cherishing diversity have become the cornerstones of my approach to filmmaking. They remind me that in the vast tapestry of cinema, it’s the myriad of threads, each distinct yet harmoniously interwoven, that creates the most beautiful and impactful pictures.
