Meet Culver City Arts District Hairstylist: Joshua Fleck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Fleck.  Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Joshua.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I grew up playing with hair as much as I could as a child. Loving the creativity of it. As a young adult I tried beauty school a few times, until I finally earned my license through an apprenticeship program. I have worked in many aspects of the beauty industry. My favorite place, behind the chair; also worked in research & development, freelancing working fashion shows and in education. I have worked in SF Bay Area, Miami/Boca Raton & Los Angeles. Thanks to a wonderful colleague I found my place at The Compound.

Has it been a smooth road?

It definitely has not been a smooth road. I tried beauty school 3 times each time not finishing due to school closing or just not being able to finish because of needing to work full time to support myself. I always did hair though.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story – what was the hardest part of your life or career?

I would say the hardest time of my career was 2013- late 2015. I had left the salon; I was on the Westside and moved to the Melrose area. In my industry it’s kind of suicidal to your business to move far from where you build your clients. People do not travel. I made it through with persistence and the loyal clients that followed me. Also a lot of penny pinching. You live and learn.
