Today we’d like to introduce you to Cole Pellock
Hi cole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was drawn to the world of photography and film. I remember the excitement of receiving my first camera, a basic film model, and spending hours capturing moments with friends and family. As I moved into high school, my interest evolved from still images to the dynamic world of film. I began experimenting with cool social media-type videos and transitions, which fueled my passion and led me to pursue film at Columbia College in Chicago.
At Columbia, I initially focused on directing, but I soon realized the importance of being well-rounded. I immersed myself in various aspects of filmmaking, from editing to lighting, to truly understand where my strengths and passions lay. Working on major feature films like Batman and Transformers was an incredible experience, but it also made me realize that my heart was in short-form content rather than large-scale productions.
After college, I faced some challenges in finding my place in the industry. My move to Los Angeles marked a turning point, where I joined a small production studio focused on short-form content, like documentaries and commercials. However, it wasn’t until the studio closed down that I truly found my stride, deciding to work for myself and create content on my own terms.
One of the most pivotal moments in my career was working for Jlux Label, a women’s wear company. This experience gave me the opportunity to explore different areas of e-commerce, fashion, and social media marketing. It was during this time that I realized my ability to create engaging, short-form content for brands. The onset of COVID pushed me to take the leap and fully commit to working for myself. I knew that the skills I had developed could be applied across multiple brands, allowing me to thrive independently.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with a variety of fashion brands, blending my love for film with the dynamic world of fashion. Recently, I’ve started to branch out from fashion into other forms of short-form content, like working with experts like neurologists, and body movement experts. A significant milestone was growing the social media presence of Dr. Jim Costello, a neuroscientist, from zero to 420,000 followers and over 200 million views within a year. This success inspired me to launch my own social media marketing company, Social Pop, where I now help brands market and run their businesses on social media through engaging video and photo content.
In addition, I’ve had the honor of working with celebrity clients such as Kesha and Paula Abdul, creating fashion films for magazines, publications, and interviews. My journey has taught me that passion and persistence are key. Whether through self-experimentation or formal education, the most important thing is to stay consistent, push through challenges, and keep evolving. I’m excited to continue expanding my work and helping others tell their stories in the digital age.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to where I am today has been anything but smooth. One of the earliest challenges I faced was the struggle between following my passion for short-form content and the pressure from my professors and industry norms to focus on feature films. During my time in college, short-form content for platforms like YouTube and Instagram was often dismissed by filmmakers, and I was advised against pursuing it. Despite this, I was drawn to the creativity and immediacy of short-form projects. It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles and worked with companies that specialized in this area that I fully embraced my passion, realizing that this was where I wanted to be.
Another significant struggle was navigating the traditional nine-to-five job landscape. After working for various companies in production and fashion, I found that the corporate environment stifled my creativity and left me feeling undervalued. The routine of working long hours for someone else, only to be too drained to pursue my own artistic projects, made me realize that the nine-to-five grind wasn’t for me. It was a difficult decision, but I ultimately chose to work for myself, a move that allowed me to reclaim my time, focus on projects I care about, and gain the respect I deserve.
These challenges have been instrumental in helping me grow, particularly in understanding and asserting my worth as an artist. They’ve taught me not to settle for less and to trust in my ability to work with big brands, clients, and even celebrities. Knowing my worth has empowered me to pursue my goals with confidence and to carve out a space in the industry where my creativity and passion can truly flourish.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work in the film and video industry as a short-form video artist, specializing in creating engaging content for a variety of clients, ranging from fashion brands and experts to celebrities and couture fashion houses. My work includes producing fashion films that help sell products or garments and creating captivating social media content designed to perform well on platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube.
I’m most proud of a few key achievements in my career so far. One of them is my work with Dr. Jim Costello, a neuroscientist who started with no social media following. Over the past year, I’ve helped him grow his presence to over 420,000 followers and over 200 million views on his content. I’m also incredibly proud of the opportunity to work with celebrities like Paula Abdul and Kesha, creating fashion films and interviews that showcase their style and persona. Additionally, I’ve recently launched my own social media marketing company, Social Pops, where I help brands, creatives, experts, and celebrities develop and manage their social media presence through daily content creation and strategic posting.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my comprehensive approach. I have a deep understanding of both fashion and film, coupled with a strong knowledge of what works on social media. Unlike many who specialize in just one area—whether it be cinematography, directing, or social media—I offer a full, intuitive package. I can creatively direct a project, from finding models and scouting locations to filming various types of content, such as campaign videos and TikToks. I also ensure that the content is optimized for social media with the right captions, hashtags, and strategies to ensure it performs well online. This ability to handle all aspects of a project, combined with my expertise in fashion and film, truly sets me apart in the industry.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has played a very small role in where I’ve gotten to today. Everything I’ve achieved in my business has been the result of hard work, persistence, and the connections I’ve made along the way. My success isn’t about being in the right place at the right time; it’s about getting out there, making connections, and ensuring that every interaction is positive and respectful.
When it comes to my celebrity clients, those relationships didn’t come about by chance. They were the result of work I did on previous jobs, some of which I took on for free just to gain experience and build my reputation. Because I delivered high-quality work on those projects, people remembered me. When the opportunity arose, they thought of me and trusted me with larger, more high-profile projects.
In my business, I’ve relied on a lot of trial and error—what some might call A-B testing—to figure out what works and what doesn’t. It’s not about getting lucky; it’s about staying conscious and aware, understanding what leads to success, and having the resilience to keep trying when things don’t go as planned. When something doesn’t work out, I don’t see it as bad luck; I see it as a learning opportunity. I adjust, try again, and keep moving forward.
The key to my success has been a commitment to respectful, honest interactions, and never being afraid to reach out and follow up with people. It’s about taking every opportunity seriously, treating every person with integrity, and continuously striving to improve. For me, luck has little to
