Meet Clark Vautier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clark Vautier.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in New Zealand and started my career as a Research Analyst for a large stock-broking company in Australia before moving to London and working for a number of large international banks. I moved to California in the 90s to study acting and worked in the construction and advertising industries.

As an independent Marketing Consultant for the last 17-years, I advise small-to-medium sized businesses ($5-50m in revenues) on growing profits through high-impact marketing strategies. I have a Professional Designation in Marketing from UCLA and am a certified Duct Tape Marketing™ Consultant. I have been a guest speaker at the UCLA Anderson School of Business and the Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine Executive MBA programs.
Outside of work I love the outdoors and am an avid mountaineer. I have climbed mountains all over the world including the Matterhorn in Switzerland, Mont Blanc in France, the highest volcanoes in the world in Ecuador and 4 of the fabled 7-summits (the highest peaks on each continent). My travels have taken me on adventures all over the globe including sailing from Tonga to Fiji, mountain biking from Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park, kayaking the Napali Coast in Hawaii and many other hiking and mountaineering expeditions. I was instrumental in developing the Ocean Kayak Program for the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up in a small town in New Zealand, I was aware of a big wide world to explore so, as soon as I could, I started traveling. I’ve been to over 55 countries and lived and worked in 3 different countries; each time I had to start from scratch with very few resources and contacts. I always wanted to move to California but it took many years to realize that dream and it was a massive struggle to finally get my Green Card and become a US Citizen.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I love helping business owners break through growth plateaus. I do that by delivering high value marketing strategies and productivity systems, organizational team building and leadership development services. This includes research, strategic planning, social media strategy, websites, communication, branding and promotional initiatives. I begin by reviewing your existing marketing practices then identifying additional revenue streams and recommending high-impact business growth strategies to increase profits. Here are some examples of services I have provided to past clients:

– Co-facilitated a series of communication workshops for multiple teams of Red Bull high-performance athletes and artists; participants reported immediate performance improvements.

– Designed and executed a team-building retreat for Red Bull North America; immediate boost to company morale and productivity reported.

– Was a trusted advisor and accountability coach for a leading fixed asset fund manager over a period of 5-years; client doubled assets under management to over $300M.

– Coached former award-winning advertising exec back into the marketplace; client landed multiple contracts during the coaching period.

– Provided marketing strategy for the largest North American Mountain Guiding company. Supervised their complete brand refresh including a new website and communications plan, resulting in a 30% increase in revenues over 2 years.

– Guided a client through the acquisition of a gym, analyzed P&L and valuation numbers, revamped existing org structure, budget forecasting, created and set performance goals and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and created a communications schedule.

My diverse background has made me adaptable to quickly assess and provide solutions for a wide range of business challenges. Always curious, my natural networking skills have been enhanced by my ongoing commitment to learning and personal development. As a student, I learned humility and how to stay open and flexible to new ideas; as a teacher, I learned how to communicate clearly and effectively, and; as an adventure guide, I learned about leadership and how to manage group dynamics.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe in the old adage that luck occurs when preparation meets opportunity and that fortune favors the bold. That said, I don’t think that luck has played much of a role in my life and business. My belief is we experience life based on how we choose to perceive it; it is a choice whether or not to make lemons out of lemonade. I am grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way, especially from the kindness and generosity of others, and I aspire to give back as much as I can.
