Meet Civil Engineer & Photographer: Bennette Tan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bennette Tan.

Bennette, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I knew I have had a knack for arts the moment I nailed an artist of the year award back in high school during the graduation rites. And one thing I’ve noticed in those early days, I always have this longing to capture magnificent or just pure natural beauty around me once my eyes laid upon it even for a glimpse. I just didn’t know how back then.

But as fate would have it, a family friend would give me an unwanted old SLR camera. That was a game changer. With that camera, I was able to capture images and moments my eyes and brains can distinctly see that nobody else can. It was amazeballs.

What’s even more amazing, I came to realize that I can actually catch and confine time within 4 enclosed lines. I am actually a “time catcher” if I may say so. LOL.

Like any other passion that needs to be satisfied and fulfilled, I went on to improve my humble skill through the years in by whatever means possible. And learning was just wonderful and fun.

Before I had a dream of having a mini-exhibit to showcase my works as a photographer but that dream had never been realized because of my hectic schedule in the project. As I have mentioned before, I’m a Civil Engineer by profession and a time catcher by heart.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t easy for me chasing my passion because photography and engineering works are two different fields.

Nevertheless, the said difficulties do not prevent my enthusiasm from capturing good images, collaborating with beautiful people and to improve further my skill in photography.

Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
There are a significant number of photographers out there whose work inspires me to improve my skills in photography, one of those who I really admire most is none other than the master of lighting, the late Dean Collins. The way he explains photography is something that really encourages me to appreciate photography, he explains something that seems incredibly complicated into understandable pieces of information, making people realize that in fact when you know your lights there’s so much that can be done.

Of course, love in photography is also an ingredient to capture more stunning images.

What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
I don’t have one in particular but if given a chance, I would like to do either commercial or fashion photography.

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Probably, push through with my passion and think big instead of becoming an engineer. LOL.
