Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy B.
Hi Christy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
People often assume I’ve had formal design training or grew up around design and construction all my life. But the truth is, everything I’ve learned over the past 10+ years in the industry has been organically earned through hands-on experience. I began as a home improvement Jane-of-all-trades, doing odd jobs like fixing drapery or refinishing furniture; skills I naturally developed all my life as a lover of creativity. My education in Theatrical Arts dovetailed nicely into this arena as I learned not only how to execute a costume or set design but the importance of being able to create a feeling, mood, and theme through the visual arts. Although I didn’t consider myself a designer at first, I was lucky to have clients early on that recognized my potential and asked me to work on projects that were far beyond my experience at the time. Doing so stimulated my autodidactic nature and I’ve immersed myself in all aspects of home design and renovation, continuing to expand and grow to larger challenges like new construction and out-of-town projects.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I didn’t have a mentor or a clear vision in the beginning and had to stumble and trip my way through trying to figure out this whole “business thing.” I would have liked a model or a path to follow, but I’m sure I’ve grown more as a person by doing it my own way. The creative part is easy, the business part is hard. Interior designers often lament that people say to us, “oh wow, I love shopping for my home, your job must be so fun” And it’s all we can do to keep a straight face because ‘shopping’ is maybe only 15% of what we actually do! One of the biggest obstacles I’ve always faced is that most people don’t really understand what a designer does.
We’ve been impressed with Christy B Design & Christy B Home, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are two distinct businesses within the Christy B brand. Christy B Design provides custom interior design and remodels design services to homeowners and builders in the greater Los Angeles area, as well as select out-of-town projects. Christy B Home creates luxury decorative pillows from designer textiles for home design enthusiasts and interior designers alike. Both companies embody the core values of quality, creative expression, and customization. Our goal in both companies is to make custom-designed homes and goods the preferred choice as opposed to cookie-cutter, big-box store offerings. We believe your home should be as unique as you are.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I studied to be an opera singer! I even performed with a summer opera troupe in Italy. That feels like a lifetime ago, but it’s no surprise that in my current design work, I am drawn to the slightly theatrical!
