Today we’d like to introduce you to Christie Gee
Hi Christie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Los Angeles in 2007 from a very small cowboy town in Texas called Bandera. I followed a boy I met on Myspace out to the city and 17 years later I am still here!
I have always been drawn to all art and music so in 2012 I started my blog christiegee.com. There I interviewed some of my favorite musicians that I have befriended over the years, many I had loved since my high school years back home. Flash forward a few years and I finally decided to start my podcast The Christie Gee Podcast, which was my blog in audio form! I have since then continued to chat with musicians, actors, comedians, tattoo artists, photographers and more!
When covid hit and lockdown began I dove back into the art world and started to draw again. What started as a fun hobby has turned into a side job. Along with my podcast, I have had the honor to continue working with people who inspire me in this life. I have done artwork for bands, business and most recently Bob’s Burgers featured one of my art pieces on their Instagram page. It’s been such a fun adventure!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say it has for sure been fun but not always smooth.
Some of my biggest struggles have been dealing with mental health struggles and A.D.H.D. Those two have been my Everest! Creative roadblocks are really tough when you just want to create! It can be discouraging and hard to navigate.
I have also had to battle people who have stolen my art to find it on a website somewhere else on a tee shirt, being made by some third party mega company that doesn’t know or care about me or my art. That is really hard fight legally and it really wears me down.
I also edit all my podcast episodes myself. Learning to do that has been a challenge, but I have also learned so much!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a podcaster / artist.
I am known for my podcast and art that draws a lot of attention by people who enjoy the music scene. Especially the pop punk and emo genre. I have for 25+ years found such a wonderful community in that scene so it’s been really wonderful to be a part of that for someone else out there. I also enjoy drawing art pieces of other genres as well.(I really enjoy doing portraits of musicians that I admire) I never believed that anyone should put themselves in a box, but to love what they love! So I express that in my art and podcast. Sometimes that looks a little different than what people may be used to seeing, but I love that!
I also feature art on issues such as mental health from time to time because I feel that it’s not talked about enough and it is so very important.
I am most proud of the progress I have made since this journey has begun. There are times when it can feel defeating, competing with the world, but then I look back on my drawings and my podcast and it makes me proud of what I have accomplished without formal education / art school or any training in audio editing. I will always be learning and I am looking forward to it!
I believe what sets me apart from others is the way I am just myself. At age 43 it’s hard to navigate when others in that age group seem so much more “grown up” and / or “normal.” I am still drawn to colorful art, unconventional fashion and music that many adults seem to have forgotten about along the way! I have always valued people being their authentic self and even though it can be hard at times, I really value that about myself.
How do you think about luck?
Oh man! I feel like one of the luckiest when it comes to so much!
I am surrounded by so many wonderful family and creative friends who inspire me and love me for me. I also have a husband that is my ultimate cheerleader. I don’t know where my life would be without my community. Doors have opened for me that I didn’t deserve and I am forever thankful for those people and the opportunities I have been given.
I hope that one day I can be that for someone else.
