Meet Chow Tuy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chow Tuy.

Hi Chow, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From a young age, I was drawn to playing musical instruments and eventually began writing my own songs and playing in bands with friends. I found that music allowed me to express myself in ways that words alone could not, and it provided a means of connecting with others. Growing up as a Cambodian American in a rural town outside of Houston, I often felt like an outsider in both the Cambodian and American communities. But music was a constant source of comfort for me, helping me navigate the challenges of feeling caught between two worlds.

After many years of soul-searching and working blue-collar jobs, I made the decision to move to Los Angeles and pursue my passion for music more fully. I enrolled in a recording school, and the experience was both exciting and challenging. I was exposed to a whole new world of music and learned the technical skills needed to produce high-quality recordings. Through this journey, I have discovered a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, and I am grateful for the ways in which music has enriched my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a Cambodian American, I struggled with cultural identity, feeling caught between two worlds and not fully belonging to either the Cambodian or American communities. Even simple activities like band practices were fraught with tension, as I felt judged for “hanging out with my white friends” by some members of the Cambodian community and tokenized as the “Token Asian” by non-POC. It was a challenge to find my place and feel comfortable in my own skin.

Despite these challenges, music provided a powerful outlet for self-expression and connection, regardless of cultural background. Unfortunately, my pursuit of music was often met with discouragement from close friends and family. My parents, for example, wanted me to pursue a more practical path such as med school or a trade school, believing that the arts were reserved for the affluent. The lack of support contributed to a persistent feeling of self-doubt that I still grapple with today.

Despite these obstacles, I never gave up on my passion for music, and it has ultimately made me stronger. These days, my parents and family are supportive of my musical endeavors, and I am grateful for the way that music has enriched my life and allowed me to connect with others in meaningful ways.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m thrilled to have recently released an EP with CSTY titled “Never Come Down”. We’ve been collaborating for a couple of years now, and I’m proud of the music we’ve created together. I also have another EP set to release later this summer, which is another exciting project that we’ve been working on.

As part of the promotion for “Never Come Down”, we also shot a DIY music video for one of the tracks, which was a really fun experience. I’m interested in exploring this medium more in the future and hope to create more music videos that blend my passion for music with my love of cinema.

In fact, I dream of one-day creating projects that marry these two mediums in new and innovative ways. While music will always be my primary focus, I believe that exploring the intersection of music and cinema will allow me to tell stories and express myself in even more powerful ways.

What sets me apart from others is my dedication to bringing authenticity and creativity to every project that I work on. I have a deep respect for music history and tradition, but I’m also constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible with modern technology and techniques. I’m constantly learning and experimenting with new ideas and sounds, and I’m not afraid to take risks in order to create something truly special. Another thing that sets me apart is my ability to produce and engineer my own music. This has given me a lot of creative freedom when it comes to creating music, and it allows me to experiment with different sounds and styles.

I am most proud of my ability to connect with others through my music. I believe that music is a powerful tool for bringing people together and promoting positivity in the world. Whether it’s through lyrics, melodies, or my performance, I strive to create music that inspires and uplifts others.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the value of perseverance and adaptability. There have been times when creative differences with collaborators threatened to derail projects, but I learned to communicate effectively and find common ground in order to move forward. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, I had to adjust to a new reality of virtual collaborations and remote recording sessions, but I learned to adapt to the situation and find creative solutions to keep the music flowing.

I’ve also faced numerous unknowns and uncertainties, from financial struggles to personal setbacks. But I learned that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth and learning. By staying focused on my goals and working hard, I was able to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side.

Ultimately, I’ve learned that success in the music industry is not just about talent and hard work but also about building strong relationships and staying true to oneself. By staying authentic and cultivating a supportive network of collaborators and willing listeners, I believe that anyone can achieve their dreams and make a meaningful impact in the world of music.
