Meet Chieh Hsiung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chieh Hsiung.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was growing up in Taiwan, I have never liked my professional performance very much. Because of the influence of the Asian environment, as a plump female dancer, I have relatively little self-confidence in the process. But fortunately, in this process, I have always foreseen teachers and classmates who are willing to help me. It has allowed me to regain my confidence and use different methods in my professional field to give full play to my talents. After graduating from university, I stepped into the professional dance company earlier than others and used teaching to stabilize my life. This is an opportunity that may not be available for graduation from a general dance department. Perhaps because I knew from a young age that my conditions were not better than others, so I learned more about different fields of art. Also because of different kinds of baptism, I have more different opportunities on the road in the future.

After graduating and working in Taiwan for two years, I saved a sum of money and came to New York, hoping to improve my language skills and connect to other parts of the world because of this. The impact in New York is really too great. I have to learn how to stand out in the selection process, or how to express my opinions, how to like myself… etc. There are too many things that are contrary to the process of my growth. Since I was very fond of creation when I was in school, I had a lot of different baptisms in my life when I came to New York. And I was able to easily meet many talented artists. I am also used to looking for artists in different fields when I was growing up. Cooperation, to break through my own comfort zone. It also allows me to create under difficult circumstances and get more creative inspiration. After a few years, I have also begun to establish that my own creative source is life, and the creative concept is to connect art with the public. I hope that the audience can see my work, can understand, and bring a little positive in this troubled world. Energy. The ultimate goal, I hope that everyone who has watched my work can smile with confidence.

In this environment, there are too many talented people. Appreciate each other with respect and an open mind, this artistic connection can go further and better.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a foreigner, it difficult to express myself. But luckily that I met so many mentors help me through everything. And I am always a fighter. Doesn’t matter how far is home/dream, I am always keep moving, keep reaching.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Try everything possible at the beginning. Whatever the form. Never be afraid to face failure. Remember to believe in yourself a little more; it is important to have self-confidence, but at the same time remember to know where you are grateful for where you come from.
