Meet CheYu Sui of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to CheYu Sui

Hi CheYu, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started on a small island in New Jersey called Wildwood in 2013. At that time, my passion was DJing, and I was really into EDM, especially big room house, which was popular back then. Apart from attending classes and going to Chinese supermarkets or casinos in Atlantic City on weekends, I spent most of my time listening to music and downloading songs. Finding life on the island too dull, I traveled to the South and the West before transferring to a school in Atlanta, then to New York, and later to a military academy in Missouri. I was constantly searching for what I loved. It was at the military academy that I learned how to DJ, thanks to my roommate from Singapore. But it was just a hobby then.

When the military academy closed, I moved to Seattle and stayed there. I attended the University of Washington, where I frequently hosted house parties and DJed. Each party would draw around 40-60 people. During this time, I learned to make beats using FL Studio, initially focusing on hip-hop music because it seemed relatively simple. Between 2017 and 2020, hip-hop was still quite popular. I would make beats and send them to various rappers, starting with some underground ones. Eventually, a once-famous Taiwanese rapper discovered one of my beats, which gave me some exposure in the market, even though he was no longer in his prime. This led to collaborations with Hong Kong rappers and, more recently, the well-known Chinese singer Ice Yang Changqing.

I’ve never given up, and currently, I collaborate most frequently with a German producer named Duce. He has worked with top artists like Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, Quavo, and Takeoff. We are closely connected, and nearly 40% of my beats are collaborations with him because of his unique sound.

After graduating from university, I moved to Los Angeles. Initially, I interned at a music studio. In the summer of 2023, I decided to relocate to LA permanently to rekindle my dream from New Jersey—to become a DJ. I love partying with people and the feeling of standing in the chaos, surrounded by others dancing and enjoying the music. I have a strong passion for house music. I started DJing at small bars, but the gigs were infrequent, sometimes only happening every 2-3 months or even less often. This was frustrating and time-consuming, so I decided to organize my own events where I could DJ. I found this to be effective, so now I host events to DJ and play the music I love.

I’m not at a top level yet, but I’m on my way. Reality is an illusion, and I’m trying to find what is real within the illusion.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy road for me. I was supposed to graduate from college, find a job, and stay in the office from Monday to Friday, eventually getting married. Everything was planned out before I graduated. I didn’t originally intend to stay in Los Angeles, but due to certain reasons, I gave up my previous life and stayed here. My ex-girlfriend played a very important role in this journey. She was incredibly supportive and was the origin of my music. However, I believe that new stories will unfold in the future, even if they are only temporary for now. Now, organizing events is also a way for me to fulfill a promise I made to myself when I came to Los Angeles.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I am trying to organize events in different cities while working closely with Valentina Galantucci, with a stronger focus on the Chinese market in Los Angeles. I am also pushing Valentina Galantucci to tour in different regions and cities, elevating her to a new level. Additionally, I am in discussions with new event organizers to plan and research a new event in September, which will attract an audience of 700 people.
