Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheri Mahlknecht.
Hi Cheri, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So many twists and turns along the way… Born in Encino, California two (sisters) I am the delicious cream filling in the middle of two cookies.
Lanai Road Elementary, Portola Middle School, Birmingham High School.
I was immersed in both English and Spanish as a youngster. Becoming fluent in Spanish would later on serve me well in my career choice. I was a Brownie, a Junior, and a Cadette (Girl Scouts). From an early age, found my passion for a life of service and community. Volunteering has been a lifelong commitment for me. An opportunity to give back and help others along the way.
Attended San Diego State College. Graduated with a teaching degree. Was hired at age 22 to teach a Bilingual Kindergarten in a small town near the California /Mexico border. That is where being Bilingual was a huge asset. Stayed in San Diego for five years. Returned home to LA and was immediately hired by LAUSD. I remained with LAUSD for 43 years of service. I retired in 2011. I really loved my work and knew that I made a difference in the lives of many children. I have kept in touch with many families over the four decades. I never really stopped “teaching”. I tutor students; I lead workshops.
I speak at conferences…sharing my knowledge and enthusiasm for the profession! Anything that involves young children has my undivided attention!!! I volunteer at the Skirball Cultural Center (Noah’s Ark) and the Children’s programs at the Tarzana Community Cultural Center in Tarzana. I am not slowing down at all…
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Timing was everything…I was fortunate to be in the right field at the right time. I am a high-energy person and a problem solver.
Not easily discouraged. Excell at networking.
I strongly feel that when you are passionate about what you are doing, you find creative ways to resolve any obstacles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself to be an expert in the field of early childhood education. (Pre-K- 2) My passion is Kindergarten! (Yes, a lofty title indeed)
After 4o plus years in the field, I believe I have mastered my craft. I pride myself on keeping current with research and trends in education. I have worked with parent groups. Sharing and collaborating with teachers and parents keeps me fresh.
I am always running into former students and families. They delight in reminding me of the projects and activities they did in my class. This warms my heart and brings me such joy!
I have received numerous awards over the years.
A parent once gave me the name …”The Divine Ms. M” (not for my singing voice) Though I personally do like Bette Midler.
What sets me apart is the ENTHUSIASM and CREATIVITY I bring to teaching. I like to take it up several notches. Go the extra mile. Put in the additional time. Make learning fun, exciting, engaging, and memorable.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Because I am retired, I have more free time to spend with others. I am happy to share my personal info with anyone that has an interest in teaching/volunteering. I work with young people interested in going into teaching. I serve as a senior mentor. This is done through the organization ONE GENERATION. It’s an amazing program.
