Today we’d like to introduce you to Charm & Cherry Mabutas.
Charm & Cherry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our House was founded on memories and experiences that Charm and I spent growing up at home. Food was in the center of all the family gatherings, more often, it was actually the reason for the gathering. A blend of various flavors from different cultures always graced the family table, especially nostalgic Filipino foods. In 2010, I set off to Culinary School at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and in 2011, Charm also pursued her passion for baking at Art Institute. We then went off and explored the culinary industry through various restaurants over the years developing our craft. Ten years later, we found ourselves spending more and more time back home – cooking, baking, and developing family recipes we have often craved. Filling the bellies of our happy taste-testers, word eventually spread, and inquiries to cater began to trickle in and needless to say, we decided to team up and created Our House Kitchen Catering company – our mission is to serve delicious food that inspires people to gather.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Especially when we first launched, there was such a huge learning curve in every aspect of the business. We really had to learn to prioritize what’s important. Charm was still working full-time at a restaurant in LA and I was also managing another business as well as being a mom to two wild toddlers. We basically had to figure out how to weave Our House Kitchen into our daily schedule – and we had to do it on the fly since we decided to launch a few weeks before Thanksgiving in 2019. We also have never worked together before, so we had to adjust our roles from Big sister and Little sister to business partners and co-workers.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our House Kitchen Catering Co. was established in September 2019. We specialize in hand-crafted pies, cookies, cakes, and Filipino desserts. We are known for our Signature Banana cream pie and our Cookie HugBox. The Banana Cream Pie is layered with a buttery graham crust, house-made banana pastry cream and vanilla bean whipped cream- all made with natural flavors and the HugBox contains a variety of our cookie flavors. Each of our desserts is thoughtfully made to create a memorable feeling of nostalgia in every bite. We are most proud that Our House Catering Co. is able to provide a way to send a “Hug” to our friends and loved ones while safely practicing social distancing. We think that if you could taste a hug – it would be a boxful of delicious cookies! We are currently accepting pre-orders of our entire menu. Available for Pick up in Redlands, CA or Delivery to IE/OC/LA Our Cookies are available to ship within US Instagram: @ourhouse_kitchen.
How do you think about happiness?
Family makes us happy. Growing up, our mom would always cook up a feast and we literally celebrated every Holiday there was as an excuse to invite everybody over. Our fondest memories were friends and family coming through the kitchen door immediately greeted by the sight and smell of a whole kitchen island filled with all kinds of food and desserts. We all happily hovered over the food, going in for seconds and third plates. Our company is definitely inspired by this – we want people to experience the sense of gathering we had growing up. We are very grateful that we are able to use food to bring families together especially when social distancing is the new norm.
