Meet Charles Moret

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Moret.

Charles, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been writing music since I was 12 and started taking music seriously at the age of 17. I’m from Venice, California, and focused on sports throughout high school and middle school whilst continuing to write and sing my own songs on the side. Once I entered college on a partial basketball scholarship, I realized that I had been putting the wrong foot forward in terms of my focus on my future. Music was/is my true passion, and to set that aside for any longer would have been torture. I left that school and am now fully focused on my career and possibly transferring to USC. I struggled the year after I returned; mainly due to the fact that I was completely starting over in a new career after having progressed so far in my athletic one. These past few months have been big for me, as I released a new single that’s doing well, am working on a joint EP that I will be shopping to labels, releasing further singles during this period, and composing the score for a short film doing the festival circuit.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been, as the aforementioned struggle of realizing I had to leave a school that not only wanted me there, but that would’ve been a haven for four years. It’s a top school academically, and to leave because of my own happiness was extremely difficult, as I had just fought for a place there and then had to turn and continue to battle. The music business is filled with highs and lows, and I’ve experienced them in droves. The lows hammered me originally and are now starting to be evened out by the previously mentioned highs. There will still be struggles, but I’ve reached a plateau in which I can only go up.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m most proud of being able to diversify my sound and talent. I’ve worked with and produce rappers, but can also write a piano ballad. I can release catchy pop music through my own artist name and simultaneously compose a movie score. I say yes to every opportunity, no matter how big or small, as each one tests my ability as a composer and musician and at the end of the day, makes me better.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe it’s one of, if not THE, best cities in the world for making music. In terms of film composition, it is the only city in the world for it. I would not recommend someone starting out here, as if you don’t have the innate roots and ties to the city, it might be cumbersome to fully move here while supporting yourself and your dream. I’m extremely lucky to have grown up with and around the business to navigate myself.
