Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Cydya.
Marissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I found myself wandering aimlessly through life in my mid-twenties as many young adults do. I was working a corporate gig and unfulfilled with my work. I then participated in a wedding for my dear friend where we had our hair and makeup done. It was in that moment when a light bulb went off and I realized… I can do this! Work with people enhancing their natural beauty while making them feel so with confidence was magic. I was literally enrolled in cosmetology school two weeks after that experience. I was an amazing journey and I quickly realized and appreciated the difference in the art of beauty as well as men’s grooming. I loved both so much that once I received my cosmetology license I went on to obtain a barbering license as well. I know specialize in Editorial Hairstyling and Men’s Grooming. I also work in a studio salon in West Hollywood part-time where I offer salon services for my gorgeous clients. I’m so lucky to do what I do. I love my job and appreciate the magic in making people look and feel their best; you can’t beat it. 🙂
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting into the secret work of Editorial Hairstyling and Mends grooming has been an exciting challenge. Making connections and establishing relationships with other creatives such as photographers, producers, makeup artists etc. is a big part of the job. I love meeting new people and collaborating on amazing projects such and photo shoots, music videos and other various productions.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Some of my proudest moments were when I was teaching Cosmetology and Barbering for Paul Mitchell. There’s something magical about unlocking the unknown for a future professional. I’ve learned so much teaching my craft. I discovered that knowledge destroys fear and it’s the most gratifying feeling to give that to someone. I value education and make it a priority to continue to work on it every year.
Another proud moment for me was when I booked my first published editorial photo shoot. I’ll never forget it… It was a 6 page spread in Genlux Magazine with photographer Tracy Morris. We shot a swimsuit story for the summer issue of 2014. It was an amazing experience and I am so thankful for the network that brought me to that set.
Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
I have daily struggles but look at them as challenges that I will overcome. There’s good days and bad but my most recent struggle is being a new mom to by 3-week old baby. I’m back in set and struggle with making sure I take care of my baby and being prepared for work. I have to be sure I’ve left her with everything she needs and get to work on time with a proper kit. It’s a great challenge but worth every bit of sleepless nights and exhausting days. She is definitely my greatest accomplishment by far.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I feel that there is so much opportunity for work in Los Angeles and at the same time there is a great deal of competition. As long as you do your best show up on time with a positive attitude and prepared for the job the work will come. I’ve learned that even with as much talent as there is word gets around quickly. It would definitely be in your favor to have gratitude for the work you get and the people you work with. When people see that you are hard working and pleasant to be around they will want you to work with them time and time again. 😉
