Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Rosso.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was raised in the Sunshine State in the city of Miami, where I found my passion for makeup at an early age. I often made creative messes at my mother’s vanity as a child. Later, in my teen years my creativity grew, along with my makeup skills. I worked in the Fashion industry in Miami. After I graduated from high school, I moved to the Dominican Republic. There, I attended Medical school and simultaneously freelanced as a Makeup artist. Being a makeup artist is what I always wanted to do with my life, but my family did not see it as a “real career”. I decided to leave medical school to pursue my passion for Makeup Artistry. I went to Esthetician school to receive my license and attended makeup courses. Later I auditioned for Joe Blasco Makeup Center located in the heart of Hollywood, CA. After being accepted into the makeup institute, Joe Blasco granted me a scholarship himself. I decided on the biggest move of my life thus far, relocating to the City of Angels (Los Angeles, CA).
I graduated top of my class in The Master Course of Film, Beauty, TV and Special Makeup Effects makeup. In addition, I had the privilege to work with some of the most sought-after fashion and beauty industry professionals. It was very challenging to build my reputation and face diversity in this city thousands of miles away from my family and friends. However, I was determined to make this my career and overcome all obstacles in my path. My relentless determination, hard work, and focus payed off. With over ten years of experience, I have had the amazing opportunity to work with numerous celebrities including Paris Hilton, Sharon Stone, Shemar Moore, LeBron James, Michael Stratham, Jbalvin, just to name a few. Lastly, my biggest goal of all is to empower and inspire others to follow their dreams!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road thus far, leaving medical school to pursue my dreams. Also, going against my family’s wishes was a challenge within itself. Being told by numerous people, I was “throwing my life away”, and I was going to just be another “starving artist”. Hearing these comments only fueled me to push harder, be determined, and relentless. However, little did I know, that was only the beginning of other challenges coming my way. First, I made the move to California. Secondly, I was a struggling artist, which I felt everyone was right that I had thrown “my life away”. Thirdly, I was facing the competition of thousands of other talented Makeup artist with the same burning passion as I. As I struggled to make ends meet, bills needed to be paid. I was a babysitter which provided me with limited income to barely afford a meal a day if that.
In addition, I worked other makeup jobs with no compensation, but to network, show my skills and display my work ethic. There were many days I felt like giving up and going back to Miami, but then I would have validated everyone’s opinion. It created a chip on my shoulder to prove everyone wrong. I allowed it to fuel me to go “harder”, to NEVER GIVE UP! I knew I had to show up to every job and give 100% of myself. Now, I am proud of myself for my determination and work ethic as it has taught me I can face any challenge and succeed.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a Makeup Artist for TV, Film, Music Video, Runway, Editorial, and FX makeup. I enjoy doing it all, from an editorial to monster making. I thrive at being creative! I am very appreciative for every opportunity that I have had. I love what I do! What sets me apart is my attention to detail, creativity, and personality. Talent will get you to the door, but your personality will keep you there. It is very important for me to set the mood in the makeup room as I always have a smile that exudes positivity. No matter what look I am creating, I enjoy keeping conversations fun, or deep, and being attentive to my client’s needs.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry growing and evolving. I have loved makeup before it became trendy and before beauty gurus existed. The internet has provided endless opportunities for opening a space within the beauty community such as beauty influencers, makeup enthusiast, and gurus. What used to be makeup artist secrets, are only a click away in the web. I love the expansion in my industry and I am excited to see big shifts ahead.
