Meet Carla Ravanes Higham of HireBu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Ravanes Higham.

Hi Carla Ravanes, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The story of my recent life is I’m a mom to a 22-month-old boy, Balthazar, a wife to my husband Anthony, a journalist, and an entrepreneur. As for my journey, I always like to start it with the story of my dad, Biboy Ravanes, he was previously a professional basketball player before becoming a coach for the Philippine Basketball Association. Other than the obvious, I’ve always believed that my story began with his because without his sacrifices over the years, my brother and I will not where I am. My dad is an example of someone who clawed his way through blood, sweat, and tears, from the environment he was born in to provide better opportunities not just for himself but also for his family. His story is one that I carry with me often because thinking of what he’s been through and what he has overcome inspires me daily when faced with both challenges and opportunities.

Professionally, it took me a while to get to a place where I was confident in myself, my skills, and what I have to offer to the world. I have enjoyed a colorful career so far and have been given various opportunities to work with some of the world’s favorite brands but despite the early achievements I had in my career, it wasn’t until the work that I am now doing with both Hirebu and CampusWell that I feel like I’ve found my place. Ironically, I started out as a freelancer for army8 (the Digital Marketing Agency that conceptualized HireBu) but in the past two years, my partners gave me the opportunity to grow into a role that fits perfectly for me. From simply being a content strategist and publicist, my partners encouraged me to immerse myself in the EOS Management system. I am now a certified EOS Integrator and work mainly in running day-to-day operations for all three companies.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road and I can list all the challenges but really at the end of the day, what really matters is what those obstacles taught me. All the obstacles I’ve encountered strengthened my belief that ‘everything works out for the good’, there is really no losing in life because you either win or you learn. This is the belief that has gotten me through many heartbreaks, disappointments, and tears. There is always something to learn, we just have to let go of our ego in order to see that.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The pandemic was definitely a turning point for me both professionally and personally. On April Fool’s Day 2020, my husband and I found out we were pregnant with our first child and a few weeks later, I started a new role at a army8, a digital marketing agency based in Boston.

When you become a mom, whether if it’s in the middle of the pandemic or during ‘normal’ times, there’s always a shift and a transition. My son, Balthazar, inspired my own healing journey which was also necessary during the pandemic. The pandemic forced everyone, including myself, to let go of escapism and really focus on what is going on internally. The time spent at home gave me the space to really understand look at my life’s choices, my triggers, and actively work on them.

Professionally, the pandemic taught me that there’s this new world of work where companies and individuals can work effectively and efficiently without being physically together. My partners are based in the East Coast while our best team members are based all over the world, our location makes no difference in the work we produce or the bond that we have with each other. An effective team is built on trust and understanding and as long as everyone on the team, whether a freelancer or a full-time worker, is committed and accountable to the overall vision and goal, success is possible.
