Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Nalchajian.
Samantha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell in love with make up at an early age. While in school I studied American fashion and its transformation through the decades. I was instantly hooked. I spent more time studying KevynAucoin’s Making Faces than the regular required reading. This lead me to practicing for hours on myself & others and researching everything I could get my hands on. What once was a hobby turned into a passion, and I started thinking about the possibility of a makeup career. After some research I chose to go to the Makeup Designory (MUD) School in Burbank, California even though I had never visited the state itself. After graduating from MUD I started taking jobs on photo shoots and film sets. Though I enjoyed doing makeup I also had an interest in skin care and would often make little scrubs and creams for my family and friends. I would freely give skin care advice, and a friend of mine encouraged me to get professionally certified. After going to esthetician school and finally getting my license my first boss expressed interest in selling a specialty lip balm I made for her. This led me to developing my own skin care line: Little Red Potions. It took me nearly a year to set this up, but I’m excited to announce that it has just recently launched.
Has it been a smooth road?
I learned early on that a career in makeup wasn’t without its difficulties. The freelance jobs were often plagued with poor pay and some unprofessionalism. However more often than not I did enjoy the people I worked with. They usually brought friends, girlfriends, or wives on set, and I loved teaching those different ways to do their makeup. I also gave them skincare advice and found I enjoyed doing that more than being on set.
