Meet Brittany Maffia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Maffia.

Brittany Maffia

Brittany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a personal chef in 2007 and quickly was asked by my clients to host dinner parties, political events, etc. I was not sure what I was getting into because, before I knew it, I had started a catering company. I didn’t like that term as I associated bad, stale, and boring food with “catered” events. It became clear to me that if I was able to do it my way, then I could get excited about it. I was notorious for going to local farmers markets in all parts of San Francisco in the early days. This gave me inspiration and a connection to the food that was so special. After a few years, we had the housing crisis, and I was let go, and the gigs stopped coming in. I was forced to go back to my day job. Although it was still in the hospitality industry, I wasn’t as connected. A few years later, in 2012, I was able to convince myself to take the risk, quit my job, and make Urban Organics my full-time career. I had no clients, no revenue, just my dream. Fast forward to 2024, I have 10 full-time employees and about 10 part-time/ seasonal. It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel so fortunate every day to do what I love and bring people joy through the hospitality business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been SO many! Where to start? The first was the housing crisis, second was either not having enough clients or staff to fulfill events. When I started it was just me for a while. All the shopping, cooking, cleaning, working events, etc. There have been managing staff issues, technology issues, and of course through a pandemic in there. It’s all been part of the journey, and it has forever changed my life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Urban Organics, we strive to bring an unforgettable event experience to each client. Whether it is a corporate lunch, wedding, birthday, or a large conference, we seek to make the guest experience exceptional. We believe that the food quality and presentation must be met with the same intention and love as our client experience.

What are your plans for the future?
We are currently growing in our events team, culinary team, and beyond. We are excited to keep innovating our guest experiences as well as changing our menus seasonally. We plan to focus more energy into our event production, which will tie together our whole vision.
