Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Cabral.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brandon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started becoming a filmmaker around the late years of high school. I decided to take a leap into this creative industry by shooting small videos just for my friends and I. My first “edit” was a Coachella Recap where I snuck my DSLR into the venue and my friends loved it. From there, I made small edits of just certain events of my friends and I until we graduated. I took a year to play rugby and wanted to in college or professionally, but had a very bad concussion that took me out of the sport.
A year later, I was admitted into film school and this really helped me hone my craft, meet new creatives, network, and shoot numerous amounts of projects. It has almost been three years since I entered the film industry and have worked as a DP (Cinematographer) with many known companies ranging from commercial work, Instagram content, music videos, independent films, and feature films. Companies, people and brands I have worked for thus far have been Yes Theory, LIVE Nation, Lamborghini, LA Society, TGIF Lifestyle, Urban Conscious the EDM duo DVBBS, Charlie Sheen, Carmen Electra, SOB x RBE, Marie Westwood Magazine, and a plethora of directors. Without the knowledge or competition of my surroundings, I would definitely not be where I am today and can’t thank it enough. It’s not the starting line nor the finish line that matters, it’s everything in between it that counts, and am glad I am still on the way to my finish line.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in a creative industry, it’s nothing but a bumpy road. Just from being in a creative rut, struggling financially, or doubting myself. I believe having a smooth road towards your profession means you’re doing it wrong. The bumps, the curves, the let downs are what helped me gain my experience and achieve the hustle that I have now. I can’t pinpoint too many of my obstacles. Though I can assure you that this road has been filled with long hours, lots of disappointments, and unexpected events but, it’s all been worth it.
What else should we know?
Being a Director of Photography, or cinematographer, I specialize in the visual representations of a project. Anything you see in a visual piece that deals with framing, composition, or lighting. I am also a Creative Director and Editor for many brands. With that said, my job in those are to create unique edits and pieces for the brand, market content, etc.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, it would have been to start earlier.
