Meet Bomin Weon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bomin Weon.

Bomin Weon

Hi Bomin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hi! My name is Bomin, but I go by Bo for short. My story begins in Korea (where I was born), continues in Australia (where I spent my childhood and adolescence), crosses the Pacific Ocean to Boston (where I attended college), and is now being written in Los Angeles (where I moved post-grad last year). As a pastor’s kid, my creative roots can be traced back to church – my first musical steps were taken listening and singing at choir rehearsals, playing through worship sets, and singing and dancing to Sunday school tunes. What began as an obligatory responsibility (something I’m sure many PKs will relate to haha) has taken me on an amazing journey, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Three words that best describe my story so far would be nomad, overcome, and trust. “Nomad” for feeling out of place and far from home – not only physically, oftentimes spiritually, but also in my overall path as an artist and creative. “Overcome” for conquering personal fears, expanding comfort zones, and navigating through the obstacle course of life. And “trust” because it has been the one common denominator through it all.

I moved to LA in July last year – freshly graduated and eager to dive in (shoutout to my professor Kurt – I wouldn’t be here without his support!). 6-months in, I’ve joined the wonderful team at Citizen, producing and composing music for advertising as I continue exploring my own more personal palette, sound, and storytelling. Always a work in progress.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Aside from maneuvering through waves of homesickness, imposter syndrome, and fatigue – the biggest challenge more specific to my journey as a musician was, and still is, breaking through rigidity and allowing myself to express freely and purely. Growing up, music and creativity had been experienced and modeled within a structured environment (not to discredit structure, but it comes with its pros and cons), so creative expression had to be learned, nurtured, and practiced over the years. There was a sort of resistance I had built towards creativity, and breaking down this wall was an unexpected challenge.

As I’m sure many immigrant children can relate, a desire for security, stability, and control eliminated any creative pursuit as a viable career path. It seemed too unstable and much too risky. In high school, I opted for dental school, reassuring myself that my longing to serve and make an impact would give me enough momentum to pull through – tldr; it did not. I don’t come from a creative or musical family, but music has always been a big part of my life through church. So, in my senior year of high school, I ventured out of my comfort zone and allowed myself to wonder how things would look if I pursued music instead. It was a thought that excited me immensely. This spark led me to Berklee – a springboard into opportunities for learning and community and the place where I grew to embrace and deeply appreciate a life of creativity. I am now learning how to tell my story with my own palette, and the thread of faith, trust, and love has been my anchor through it all.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My overriding vision is to craft music and share stories that inspire, console, and encourage. I want to serve and cultivate a space for creatives to thrive, learn, and grow together. And above all, I hope my melodies and lyrics point to the creator of creators. I’m still in the process of figuring out all the details – future Bo can fill you in!

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have a secret (but now not so secret) dream of opening a bakery/cafe one day. A bakery cafe with an old acoustic piano, a couple of guitars, and a space to sit and listen, sing, and write – all while munching on delicious baked goods and sipping on some latte variation. I love music, I love when people come together, and I love baked goods. Imagining a space for all three to coexist fills me with so much joy 🙂
