Today we’d like to introduce you to Bobby Martin.
Hi Bobby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey in the music industry started back in college around 2017, with me attending and spending all of the money I had going to music festivals. During college though at San Jose State University, I had the opportunity to participate in the first-semester competition for a new company called the The Up & Up Festival who was running a 48-hour competition for colleges to compete to sell the most tickets within a 48-hour window to bring a big headliner to the school for a show which happened to be Alan Walker. My 2 friends and I decided to go for it and compete amongst roughly 15 or so schools. We promoted our butts off for months on end and ended up winning the entire competition selling over 2,500 tickets within 48 hours.
During this same semester, I met Rommii at SJSU, who is now the artist I manage. Fun fact, but technically, the Alan Walker show was the first gig I was able to get him.
After competing in the competition for Alan Waker, I started working for the Up & Up Festival full-time while going to school and had the opportunity to basically build the brand from the ground up alongside the founders to where the company is at today. I spent about 5 years with the Up & Up Festival and was able to tour with artists such as Gryffin, Two Friends, Elephante, Slushii, and during the pandemic, I had the opportunity to put together multiple virtual music festivals working with some of the largest electronic music artist in the industry, Overall working for the Monster Energy Up & Up Festival changed my life. They were some of my biggest mentors and gave me the skills and understanding of how to continue thriving in the music industry.
During these crazy 5 years with the Up & Up, I continued to manage Rommii. He attended Icon Collective, a music school in LA, for a couple of those years and really, he focused a lot of his time on developing his brand and sound. Once he graduated from Icon Collective, Rommii and I went all in on his project, and we made a promise to each other that we would do this the right way and focus on creating a strong community and building a crazy dope brand.
Fast forward to now, 7 years together grinding, a lot has unfolded. We’ve dropped numerous records, engaged in endless hours of phone calls talking about our goals and the brand, strategized on what we aim to create for ourselves in this industry, took bold risks by self-funding our own shows, and a lot more, all with the intention to make big moves to get our names on the map.
Since then, Rommii has gained a lot of momentum in his career, and 2024 is now gearing up to be his biggest year yet. Rommii will going on tour with Golden Features, starting his headline show series “Rommii and the Homies”, and releasing some of the greatest records I’ve ever heard him produce.
All of this has led Rommii to join Wasserman for booking, and I have recently joined Prodigy Artists as a manager with Rommii.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Taking a step back and assessing my overall progress, I’d say it’s been a smooth journey so far. I have to give credit to where it’s due though and that goes to the incredible mentors who guided me in my music career, particularly in the Up & Up Festival and other artist managers I’ve grown close to. Certainly, there were challenges, mostly behind the scenes. Balancing two full-time jobs while building Rommii’s project which meant years of 5-hour sleep nights and constant hustle. But, when you have a strong passion for what you do, the craziness becomes worth it, especially as momentum starts to build.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I manage music talent. Specifically, Rommii. I would say I’m most proud of not giving up on my life goals. While I’m still far from achieving them, the idea that I’ve been working towards this goal for almost 7 years now is what makes me reflect on the past and think, “Damn, all those hours, all those sacrifices I’ve had to make have been worth it,” especially when I can see it starting to come together.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a significant role in my life and business journey. Now I wouldn’t say it’s all luck since I do attribute much of my success to being in the right place at the right time, recognizing opportunities that are in front of me, and pursuing them relentlessly until I find success in them.
