Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Wachman.
Ben, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After deciding to go completely solo and start my own music studio ‘In Tune’, the pandemic hit. As devastating as it was for all business owners big or small, in hindsight, it was for the better to be on my own rather than be dependent on someone else as a contractor. With the help of my loyal core clientele and mental fortitude, I stayed afloat and made it through. While it was a two years period of barely breaking even, I’m aware that many businesses didn’t make it out alive and for that alone, I am very thankful to be in the position that I am in. Since the beginning of the year, business has continued to grow and I am happy to be able to play live music again. Although the business takes up most of my time, it’s nice to take advantage of opportunities to play at weddings and other events as they arise.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As mentioned before, the pandemic was a life-altering period of time for everyone involved. Regardless of your opinion and what side you were on with rules and protocols implemented, everyone had to adjust their way of living. As a music instructor, there is an element of connection that is needed and best when in person. Due to this, not everyone wanted to switch to online lessons and almost half of my clientele was lost. There were also examples of people going through financial hardships of their own forcing them to stop what they loved and forcing me to rebuild in a time where business was at a record low. Once in person lessons became accepted by society again, the list of things in the name of preparation where heavy. Whether it was sanitation, masks, distance, signs, and the list goes on, it took extra time and attention to make sure everyone felt safe. Not saying it wasn’t needed, but it’s a bit different trying to give a voice lesson with a mask on. Figuring out how to instruct someone to shape their mouth a certain way when not being able to see their face can present a fair share of issues. With all this being said, the biggest factor that made it all work was cooperation, understanding, and the willingness to adjust in order to keep music in their lives.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
In Tune is a comprehensive, full-service music experience that offers voice, guitar, piano, and songwriting lessons. I am adamant in ensuring lessons are tailored to each student’s personal goals and each program is fully unique to them. This allows me to teach individuals of all levels, from students who want to perfect their craft and pursue a professional career in music, to people who have always wanted to learn an instrument but never had the chance. When giving lessons, I make sure that students are as in tune with themselves as they are with their instruments. This allows for better and more efficient practice sessions, achieving goals quicker, and having the freedom to create and play freely with your instrument of choice. My approach of focusing on technique first is due to it providing an opportunity to build a strong foundation and enabling the student to apply the techniques learned to any genre of their choice. This in turn makes room for more versatility. While focusing on teaching others the gift of music, I also believe it is important to inspire a student to hone in on their unique talents and build confidence within themselves through their lessons.
