Today we’d like to introduce you to Beidi Wang.
Hi Beidi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started as a child actor in China and came to the US at the age of 18. I developed strong passion for cinema in my adolescence time. It was supposed to be a far-fetched dream until I was accepted by the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The process of making films fulfilled me deeply as a young adult. Now, I am working on a feature film in China and writing my own debut feature. The enigma of movie to me has been enduring and transcendent.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Finding your own voice in Hollywood is a marathon. Thousands of talented people flush into this city for the same purpose – making dreams on the big screen. It’s easy to lose your direction or get frustrated. The good ideas and hard works are not enough to live you a decent living along the way.
Besides that, finding collaborators is crucial too. You cannot get to the top by yourself in this industry. You will need a team, so finding the right person could be the key of success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating stories about women and their womb. I have strong sentiment in this kind of story because I’m a woman myself, and the ability bestowed in us (being able to give birth) has fascinated me and terrified me constantly. My narrative short Cyber Baby is about a Cam girl (also called OnlyFans) whose occupation to be found by her virgin roommate. My thesis, Wax and Wane, tells a story about a Chinese immigrant mother who lived through the One Child Policy and now had to encounter her birth control ring during menopause. The work won the Best Global Short in SCAD Savannah Film Festival and Best Women Shot at Indie Short Fest.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To understand people genuinely. To be unbiased and less judgmental. You could be easily blinded by the facade sometimes, and knowing people to create connection will never be wrong.
