Meet Baptista Kawa of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Baptista Kawa.

Hi Baptista, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from Democratic Republic of Congo. When I was 13 I would sneak into my classroom after school and practice the dance moves I saw in movies and create some of my own moves. I spent hours teaching myself flips on the road by my grandmother’s house. I used to go jogging every Sunday and then practice breaking and other styles of dance on the road. And years later all those hours of practicing have paid off.

I’ve been dancing for almost 15 years now. I perform and teach.

Credits include:  Performances with 50 Cent, LL Cool J, The Lion King at The Hollywood Bowl, NBC’s The Voice Finale, FIFA World Cup Reveal, Toured x2 with Hip Hop Nutcracker & Kurtis Blow and an editorial video for Vogue with Lil Nas X & Hailey Bieber. Music videos for A$AP Rocky, Sia & David Guetta, Keke Palmer, Feid & Blessd, Arman Hovhannisyan, and Damiano David. Commercials for Purple Mattress, Samsung, Rhinoshield, Wine & Spirits, and XFinity in collaboration with Bboy Victor. I’m a member of the contemporary company Jacob Jonas The Company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was really hard in the beginning and most of my journey I didn’t have Dance Studios or Gymnasium with nice floors or Mats to train in My first time stepping in a Gym and nice dance Studios was when I got to The US which was 2022. So I can say it is never been easy even when I got to the US I still practice outdoor on concrete and grass I do that because reason #1 it reminds me of where I came from and also it’s free, Studios and Gyms you have to pay all the time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known as a Dancer and also a Versatile Movement Artist. Versatile because I can do multiple genre of dance/movement What sets me apart from others is the combination of African Traditional Dances mix with Hip Hop Tricks and other dance styles
