Meet Baldwin Hills Village Photographer: Tim Guest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Guest.

Tim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

At age 16, I worked in the camera dept of an East Coast department store, Caldor (like a Target). There I bought my first camera and learned photography. Not satisfied with that, I studied screenwriting and film making and after failed attempts to make a living doing that, I went back to my first love: still photography. But what I learned about motion pictures informed my photography, coupled with studying art, music, and philosophy. I also learned that photography was a more natural extension of my artistic ability and that I was better with landscapes than people but use people within a scene or landscape. Instagram has been my main platform and this year I did my first show in fifteen years with RAW ARTISTS LA.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Doing the RAW Artists Show this year at The Globe Theater, DTLA.

Were there moments when you had to struggle?
Working a day job and trying to carve out time for my art.

Is LA a good place to do what you do?
This is an awesome city for me! This is a place you can survive and thrive with plenty of opportunities, but you have to be likable and ambitious, which is hard for many creative types. As a photographer, it’s perfect for me artistically. LA is not far from diverse landscapes: deserts to the east, shorelines to the west, and mountains to the north. LA’s hodgepodge architecture can be a treat.
