Today we’d like to introduce you to Audalei.
Hi Audalei, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I fell in love with singing as a toddler when I’d scream along with “Hello Goodbye” by the Beatles. I spent my childhood and teens learning piano, guitar, bass, violin, double bass, drums, and ukulele in my basement with my brothers. I was trained in musical theatre and performed professionally as an actor around Canada. Over the pandemic, I began writing more regularly and started working with producers to bring my music to life. I released “serotonin” in February of 2022 and soon after that, I knew I wanted to buckle down and take this music thing seriously. And what better spot to do that than Los Angeles, California?
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I set my mind to something, I become ultra-focused on making it happen. Sometimes I have this delusional confidence that it’ll all work out so even in moments where things don’t look good I maintain a level of irrational faith. I used to have a super negative mindset and now I’ve really practiced reframing things to be more optimistic and asking myself things like, “what if this turns out even better than I had imagined?” When there is a hiccup in a plan (like being broke in a new country for example) I write. I sing about my obstacles so you’ll hear all about them in my music. Ultimately, all the speed bumps work as fuel for writing. Plus, it makes me so much more grateful when I’m on a smooth road.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make indie pop music with some lofi qualities. My current music is known for combining moody, dark vocals with simple instrumentation and some underwater-sounding production. For example, the drop in my latest single “meringue pie”! I’ve gone viral a couple of times on social media and generally have a light-hearted silly social media presence. I’m most proud of my music that I have coming up! Each release is a positive leveling up on the one before. I’m releasing lots in the upcoming year and I’m doing so very strategically. I want to build on the idea of contrast within a song and I’m excited for what’s coming! I try to be super honest and authentic as myself. On social media, I don’t take myself too seriously and I post pretty freely on my stories so that people get a slice of my brain. Same goes for my music. I try to stay true to my own vision and I create something unique to me. When I’m being my truest self, then I know I’ve set myself apart from others.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Probably creating imaginary worlds with my brothers. We would create cities out of rocks for the little neighborhood wood bugs. At one point, we established entire capitalist societies with leaves for our currency. When we all discovered music, our “play” became jamming together. I think we were all destined to use our imaginations for good and create art.
