Meet Ashley Senecal of Wavey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Senecal.

Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Wavey blossomed from a seed of curiosity, a desire for challenge, and a means for creativity. During my senior year at college, I interned for a trendy marketing agency in Narragansett, RI, which opened my eyes to the eCommerce world. It didn’t take long for me to have this strong desire to create something amazing of my own. I knew I didn’t just want to start any project, I really wanted it to align with my passions and allow me to express my love for the California dream. After much thought, the idea of creating a sunglass brand just clicked. Flooded with creative inspiration, I spent late nights designing the logo, branding, and website. After placing a small order of samples and sharing them with family & friends, it spread and people really resonated with it. I knew I was onto something… Fast forward five years later and Wavey has expanded through e-commerce and in retail shops all over the country!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just like everything in life, starting a business has its ups and downs, and for a good reason! If it were easy, everyone would do it and the payoff wouldn’t be as rewarding. For me, my main obstacle is myself. Many times, I have had to push myself out of my comfort zone to spread the word about my brand. Looking back, this journey has pushed me to grow in so many ways, and I truly feel it is a reflection of my personal growth as well.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Wavey is a unisex sunglass brand with a collection of colorful, funky, and affordable sunnies. Whether you’re looking for a classic everyday frame or an orange hue lens to brighten your mood, Wavey is your go-to. With our signature wave logo on the corner, you’re bound to get stopped in the street by people asking you, “Where did you get your sunglasses?”. I am most proud of the community of people who have come back repeatedly and spread the word about our brand. There is something so special about being at an event and everyone has Wavey’s on, with a specific style or color that speaks to their unique personality. Since founding the company 5 years ago, my values for sustainability and inclusivity have only strengthened as well.  I am also excited to share our shipping and promotional materials that are made of 100% recyclable materials!

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is essential. The moment you feel that burning sensation in your gut to make that big move or create something new, you have to follow it. It’s your signal to the universe that you’re committed to your goals and the more you listen to it, the more will come your way. Starting a business is a huge risk! I’ve taken countless risks throughout my entrepreneurial journey. The key is knowing when to say “jump!”.

One example of a risk I took — back in 2019 I was skating down to the boardwalk in Venice Beach and came across a vacant storefront with a sign that read “FOR LEASE ”. Something told me to take a chance and call that number. To my surprise, the person answered and I booked a showing that day! I ended up getting approved and pretty soon I had a full Wavey Pop-Up storefront in the heart of Venice Beach for a week. There was definitely a voice in my head saying questioning if this doesn’t work out, but I had to take the risk. I met so many unique and amazing people during that time, and watching them interact with the brand was so rewarding!

Over the past 5 years, Wavey has traveled with me to countless cities across the country and has trickled across the globe. I’ve done pop-ups when I didn’t feel like it and taken meetings I was nervous to ask for. Every risk and every decision has shaped Wavey into what it is today. I am determined to continue that pattern and excited to see how Wavey continues to evolve.
