Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Lowe.
Hi Ashley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Ashley. I go by Big Ash or Dr. Big Homie. I’ve been trying to put into words exactly how I wanted to introduce myself and share exactly what it is I do, but, I really can’t.
For years, I have been on this journey of self and as time goes on, I’m learning more and understanding more. Dreams and goals have changed as well as career paths.
It wasn’t until recently, at the age of 29, that I discovered the urgency to contribute in making a real change in the world. I’ve indulged in many religions, spiritual practices, trades and talents. On this that has been consistent is the fact that I want to bring about a positive influence to my family, my community, my friends, and even myself. Whether through my music, different healing methods or, simply, through conversations, my hopes are to bring balance, love and hope to every person I encounter. It’s already tough for some people as individuals, including myself, to navigate through this lifetime.
Social and economical injustice, troubles at home, religious indifference and so many other things have been oppositions and I just want to build an opportunity where we can just…..be present.
Big Ash is my stage name for my music, but, Dr. Big Homie is the persona, or business, I created so that people, no matter ethnic background, economic status, or religion, have the opportunity to grow, heal, and even just live. I’ve conquered different struggles that allow me to be relatable, understanding, patient, and loving and I just want to be that light in the most darkest places for those who need even the smallest amount of hope they can get and using my talents and gifts, I’d hope to be just that.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been smooth. I’ve had to deal with delays, distractions, and setbacks. At times, my own mind brought me down and that has been the biggest battle for me, myself. I was clinically diagnosed with different types of anxiety, depression and even felt with suicidal thoughts, but I’ve managed to master myself enough to fight against those things and I think now, I’ve become so strong that I can push through and conquer anything that comes my way that was meant to go against me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for my music. When I was a kid, performing arts was my life. However, being bullied and not have the tightest support system left me with a lot of insecurities and anxiety. It wasn’t until about a year ago I stepped into rap. My proudest moment was when I stepped on stage for the first time and no one knew I had this secret talent. I was so nervous. But I did it! That moment changed my life and now, it’s nothing for me to go on stage and get the crowd jumpin. I think what sets me apart from other artists, especially female artists, is: my voice, my lyricism, and my overall appearance (the way I dress, my stage presence, and my message). I’ve also created a clothing line and although it may just be hoodies at the moment, my line was created with the intention of healing by targeting the subconscious mind through sight. Every piece you see has a purpose behind it.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Just like my song F**k It, the biggest lesson I’ve learned was to do me in all aspects and not worry about what other people think. Ten people may not like me, but somewhere there are ten other people rooting and relating. Ive also learned the importance of staying present because if you get caught up in the past or future, you can really miss out on some amazing memories and opportunities.
