Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashkan Nochian.
Ashkan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Ashkan Nochian, though most people know me as Ash. I’m the founder of Landoos LLC, a landscape design and build company. I holds a terminal degree in Landscape Architecture and has accumulated over 25 years of experience in the field. Throughout my career, I have designed, implemented, maintained, and overseen a wide range of projects, from small residential gardens to large commercial developments and urban open spaces. My career has taken me across the globe, working in diverse climates such as arid and semi-arid regions, tropical zones, cold climates, and Mediterranean environments. In the U.S., I have worked in Idaho, Utah, and California. These experiences have equipped me with a deep understanding of how landscapes and plants adapt to various environmental conditions. In addition to my practical experience, I am also a passionate educator, having taught a wide range of subjects to diverse audiences, from beginners to graduate students. My teaching areas include sustainable landscape design, houseplant care and management, landscaping with trees and shrubs, landscape engineering, and landscape maintenance. My passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces is driven by a desire to improve the quality of life for those who enjoy them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I’ve had to overcome many challenges and obstacles along the way. As a new immigrant, my first hurdle was learning how the system works—understanding how to establish and operate a business in a new country. I also needed to adapt to a new culture and build connections to help my business grow.
Since my profession is in landscaping, I had to study California’s environment—especially the Los Angeles climate—and learn which plants thrive in this region. Finding reliable suppliers and sourcing quality materials was another challenge that required persistence and patience.
In short, running a design-and-build business involves navigating many layers—from social and cultural to environmental and technical aspects. The journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has helped me grow and refine my approach.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating meaningful, functional, and beautiful spaces that improve people’s quality of life while respecting the environment. I’ve spent over 25 years in landscape architecture, and what drives me every day is seeing a design come to life—whether it’s a backyard, a public space, or an urban garden—and knowing that it not only looks good but also serves a purpose.
I care deeply about sustainability, water-wise planting, and creating spaces that support pollinators and local ecosystems. For me, good design isn’t just aesthetics—it’s about solving problems, enhancing the user experience, and leaving a positive impact on both the environment and the people who enjoy the space. That combination of creativity, practicality, and responsibility is what makes the work meaningful.
