Today we’d like to introduce you to April Robles Patel.
April, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My father started Robles Video in the early 90s, mostly as a hobby. He was always the ‘guy’ who would bring his video camera to family events, weddings, birthdays, and holidays to name a few. Eventually, more and more people would inquire about my father capturing their special day or event with his video camera. The more interest he garnered, the more thought he put into making this into a business venture, one he called Robles Video.
After running the business out of our home for a few years, he asked me to come on a couple jobs with him, all to see if I was interested in joining him in this venture. I had just graduated college and before applying to grad school, I thought I would give it a shot. I immediately fell in love with capturing these events and tried my hardest to learn about videography, shooting, editing, and client service.
Eventually, our business grew to a point where we needed to find an office and we did, in Anaheim, CA. We continued to grow our business from that office, and soon enough, we noticed that more and more of our inquiries were coming from the South Asian market. We established a niche in doing weddings for that market and are now the market leader for Indian, Pakistani, and Sri Lankan weddings.
Today we operate out of a modern studio in Brea, CA and capture, on average, about 300 weddings and events a year. In total, we have done over 4000 events in the last 20 or so years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. The ups and downs of the economy always have an impact on the disposable spend that goes into a wedding. Additionally, with the advent of lower cost equipment and not needing to own an office like we do, or even own your own equipment, many people try to get into this game.
However, clients are able to see the level of polish that we have in everything we do from their initial appointment all the way through to the final delivery of their product, and I believe that is the reason we continue to be in business today.
Robles Video – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Robles Video is a videography company that specializes in weddings and family events. Over the last 15 or so years, we have carved out a niche in the South Asian wedding space but we do events and weddings of all faiths and cultures.
I believe we are different from others in the fact that we have some much cache with our own office, own equipment, and dedicated videographers (15 in total) who only work for Robles Video.
I am most proud of the fact that with such a highly demanding schedule and workload, I have been able to sustain Robles Video, this coming with having a toddler and getting married during this time too.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The single most proud moment to me is actually a series of smaller moments, where I see the utter joy on clients’ faces when they are so happy with their final product.
