Today we’d like to introduce you to Aoran Ma.
Hi Aoran, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the world of graphic design was undeniably shaped by the profound influence of my father, an esteemed architect based in China. Growing up, I found myself resisting the path he had paved, perhaps driven by a rebellious spirit that sought to forge my own identity. It wasn’t until I embarked on my academic journey at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where I earned my BFA degree in 2021, that I began to fully embrace the captivating realm of graphic design.
At the heart of my education, I delved into various facets of graphic design, honing my skills in branding strategy, publication design, motion graphics, and more. Eager to elevate my craft to new heights, I subsequently made the bold move to transition to the West Coast, enrolling in the prestigious ArtCenter MFA program. As I near the completion of my final term, this transformative experience has not only deepened my understanding of the profession but also revealed a broader landscape of possibilities beyond the conventional boundaries of a graphic designer.
During my time in the MFA program, I discovered a profound passion that transcended the confines of a traditional graphic designer’s role. As I sought to professionalize my practice further, I realized my artistic aspirations extended beyond the constraints of a singular title. It was in this pursuit that I began to cultivate a distinctive design style, one that seamlessly intertwines imagination, fantasy, and futurism. My exploration extended into the realms of cutting-edge AI technologies and generative codes, allowing me to push the boundaries of conventional design.
What sets my work apart is the profound influence of my daily identities. Rooted in my immigrant background, my queer identity, and an unwavering enthusiasm for American counter-cultures, each design decision becomes a reflection of these diverse facets of my life. I consider myself not just a graphic designer but an artist who utilizes graphic design as a medium of expression. My practices are grounded in professional training, ensuring a meticulous and well-crafted aesthetic that seamlessly blends artistry with expertise. As I stand on the cusp of completing this transformative journey, I am excited to carry forward this unique blend of influences, experiences, and skills into the ever-evolving world of design.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t been a smooth road, as I’ve grappled with persistent self-doubts throughout the design process. Two particularly potent identities have often clashed within me, creating an internal struggle. On the one hand, the desire to be a successful designer in the industry propels me forward, pushing me to meet industry standards and expectations. On the other hand, my queer identity, unfairly marked by society as a potential failure, introduces doubt and challenges societal norms. This ongoing internal conflict has required me to navigate a delicate balance between conforming to industry standards and championing the uniqueness inherent in queer perspectives, making the creative journey both complex and emotionally charged.
The struggle persists, but I am actively engaged in the ongoing process of harmonizing these conflicting identities to cultivate my own distinctive style that authentically incorporates queer aesthetics. Rather than succumbing to the pressure to conform entirely to industry norms or resisting societal expectations, I am dedicated to finding a creative space that allows for the synthesis of both identities. This journey is not without its challenges, but I am committed to navigating the complexities, seeking inspiration from the intersection of success and queerness, and ultimately forging a path that speaks to my individuality within the design landscape.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in atypical, expressive, and colorful design solutions, crafting a distinctive design style that seamlessly intertwines imagination, fantasy, romance, and futurism. My work stands out for its unique blend of artistic elements and unconventional aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of traditional design. I take pride in creating designs that not only capture attention but also evoke emotions, offering a fresh perspective that goes beyond the ordinary. What sets me apart is my commitment to cultivating a visual language that is not only visually striking but also deeply resonant, providing a unique and memorable experience for the audience. I am most proud of my ability to infuse my designs with a sense of authenticity and creativity, contributing to a diverse and dynamic landscape within the design industry.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I embrace the concept of risk-taking wholeheartedly in my design journey. Not only am I unafraid of failure, but I actively seek out risks in the creative process, recognizing that they can often pave the way for more innovative and unexpected solutions. I firmly believe that risk-taking is integral to fostering diversity and achieving breakthroughs in the creative realm. It encourages me to explore uncharted territories, experiment with unconventional ideas, and challenge the status quo. In my perspective, the willingness to take risks not only fuels personal growth but also contributes to a more vibrant and dynamic design landscape. It’s through embracing uncertainty and pushing boundaries that I discover the unexpected, leading to solutions that are both surprising and resonant.
