Today we’d like to introduce you to Angran Li.
Hi Angran, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up watching a lot of Heavey VFX imported Films coming from the US when I was in Beijing, China. I was always fascinated by the group of artists who’ve been building the scenes for the world inside the camera. From words to sentences to visual scenery, all the world-building elements have always been what I loved and am passionate about.
I spent a lot of time with friends since high school, shooting short films, music videos in my spare time, and I will work on feature sets as a Director’s Assistant during my summer break.
I always knew that to be able to work in the Art Department, I needed foundations by understanding the set builds. So I chose to study Interior Design for my BFA at Parsons in New York.
While I was in New York studying, I worked for the Theatre prop shops and interned for a Broadway Scenic Designer for over 2 years, and I had many different variations of experiences at Graphic offices, interior design studios, and different kinds of events like the Met Gala decor experiences.
I think all these various experiences made me who I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been challenging every moment along my journey, and I think there will be more challenges coming my way. But I like challenges, all those make me feel excited.
And as a designer, I think a Good Designer always solves problems.
I used to feel that I didn’t know enough. When I saw my surrounding colleagues, I always wanted to spend every second to learn and learn more.
But now I think it’s more important to actually be more confident, and I should be more appreciative of my past journey and what I have already learned, and be more proactive as a leader.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t listen to others. Be True to yourself.
