Hi Angel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Art was an elusive concept for me, growing up in a Chinese cultural background. Like many parents, mine believed that being an artist was an impractical career choice with an uncertain future. I couldn’t escape this stereotype, and my parents shared the same view. Yet, I felt a deep passion for art and held onto a dream that seemed uncertain and at odds with my parents’ expectations.
During my junior year of high school, I excelled in my academic courses, but my heart yearned for a different path in art. I was conflicted and unsure, facing the disapproval of my parents. Then, one fateful day, I had a life-changing experience at the movie theater while watching Disney’s animated movie, Zootopia. The captivating story and stunning visuals struck a chord with me, and I found myself moved by the characters’ brave journey and deep friendships.
As the movie ended, most of the audience left, but I stayed seated, unable to let go of the enchanting world I had just witnessed. Unexpectedly, a short video appeared on the screen, revealing the backstage pre-production process. It was a revelation for me, witnessing the step-by-step creation of art, the layering of each element, and how brushes played a pivotal role in bringing the vision to life.
This eye-opening experience left a profound impact on me. I realized that art was not just a whimsical hobby; it was a meticulous and intricate process that could evoke emotions and connect with audiences on a profound level. From that moment, I knew that I had discovered my true passion. I wanted to be part of the magical process of crafting art that leaves a lasting impression on people’s hearts.
With newfound resolution, I faced my parents with clarity and determination. I loved movies, and I was fascinated by the artistry that went into creating them. Art had become my strength, and I was no longer hesitant about pursuing my dreams. Despite the challenges and thorns that may lie ahead, I decided to embrace this beautiful journey and make it my life’s pursuit.
As I continue on this path, I envision a future where my name appears on the screen as one of the designers behind animated movies. The thought of contributing to the creation of captivating stories and enchanting visuals fills me with excitement and purpose. I am committed to nurturing my passion and honing my skills, knowing that this is the path I am destined to walk.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has never been a smooth road. There have been several stages in my pursuit of art where I felt like giving up. When I first entered college, the reality was far from the captivating preproduction shorts I had seen. Instead, it was filled with mundane practices and fundamental studies. The animated production industry felt distant and unattainable, as I had no one around me in that field to offer guidance or inspiration. Many of my friends chose different career paths upon graduation, some even becoming teachers back in our home country. The future seemed uncertain, and I questioned whether I was making the right choice.
Now, I find myself facing another challenging stage. The economy is experiencing a downturn, and layoffs are becoming common in various industries, including the art sector. Many programs have been scaled back due to the impact of population strikes. As a result, there are very limited opportunities for junior or entry-level artists. This period is undeniably tough for artists, and it feels like navigating through a storm.
Despite these hardships, I remain resilient and determined to pursue my passion for art. I understand that the road to success in the artistic world is not a smooth one, but I believe in the value of perseverance and dedication. I am willing to weather the uncertainties and challenges that come my way, knowing that every setback can be an opportunity for growth and learning.
While it might be disheartening to witness the current state of the industry, I am committed to honing my skills and continuously improving as an artist. I am exploring alternative avenues and seeking support from like-minded individuals who share my passion. Though the path ahead might be arduous, I’m determined to stay true to my dream and strive towards making it a reality. For me, the love for art and the belief in its transformative power are the driving forces that keep me going, no matter the obstacles I face.

I am a visual development artist and background designer for animated programs, and I find immense joy in the process of creating art and weaving captivating stories. Within the realm of visual development, my passion lies in crafting entire worlds and narratives through the clever interplay of shape, light, and color. My inspiration often stems from delving into the depths of art history and exploring the vast landscape of literature. I take delight in infusing my art with a rich and believable cultural background, creating a sense of authenticity that resonates with audiences.
Designing background paintings is particularly exhilarating for me because it allows me to construct scenes that are not only visually stunning but also deeply tied to the storytelling aspect of the animation. To achieve this, I dedicate a significant amount of time to thorough research, Immersing myself in the history, cultures, and stories that influence the project. Even in more fantastical settings, I strive to maintain an essence of believability, ensuring that every detail contributes cohesively to the narrative.
