Today we’d like to introduce you to Anahit Topchyan.
Hi Anahit, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins in the shadowed corridors of life, where we may find ourselves in the embrace of darkness—a realm where hope wanes, loneliness creeps, and the warm glimmer of light feels like a distant memory.
Dramatic, I know, but it really does feel that way when you’re not at your best.
I discovered my passion for electronic music on my 25th birthday, and my passion to DJ five months later. In those five months, I experienced euphoria, heartbreak, synchronicities, realizations, and extreme loneliness.
I knew I found my niche when I stumbled upon this community and decided I wanted to maneuver through it to find my place. I attended multiple music festivals, began networking, started booking gigs for my DJ friends and gained artist management experience that way, found work with Insomniac Events, and completely redefined the music I listen to.
Through a particularly difficult five-day festival which I attended solo, I decided to stay home on the last day and teach myself how to DJ. I had difficulty making myself comfortable and making friends, so at that point, I was feeling very alone, disappointed, and sad. Nothing around me was working out, and the only thing I knew I could count on was what was within me. That is when I picked up a DDJ, downloaded Rekordbox, and began messing around. Immediately, I felt better. I felt my inner child grow, like everything I ever wanted was possible; I felt free. It was a life-defining moment, as if a new path of life presented itself to me and I chose to accept it. I chose to pursue DJing in order to help share that feeling of freedom everywhere I go and with everything I do. This feeling could best be described as oneness, connectivity, gratitude for life, and unconditional love.
Today, I thrive in the niche I carved out for myself, and I am supported by amazing friends and members of my community. I have curated the sound I like which I can only describe as a hypnotic trance within the techno genre. I practice daily and play for friends, family, and music lovers in studios, silent discos, and warehouses in DTLA.
In the moments when I am performing, I feel extremely confident and untethered. I feel a greater force take over my being and guide the music where it needs to go. I impress myself sometimes as the force builds a field of kinetic energy that is electrifying to the listener.
I consider my sound to be high on energy. I believe heightened energy levels have positive effects on your overall well-being. In the body, increased energy absorption leads to an elevation in endorphin production, improvement in cardiovascular well-being, and an enhancement of cognitive awareness, or focus. On the emotional plane, elevated energy equips you with enhanced stress-coping abilities, motivation to keep on going with positivity and resilience, and it facilitates a deeper sense of joy and well-being. Rising to heightened emotional states establishes greater room for transformative shifts. It cultivates receptivity, adaptability, and positivity. These are insights gleaned from personal experience and from the wisdom of luminaries and life mentors I enjoy learning from such as Tony Robbins. These rationales pave the way for self-discoveries to uncover much more effortlessly. I curate an environment that empowers my listeners to embark on internal voyages of their own.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is an all-terrain road; a combination of ups and downs, lefts and rights, yields and U-turns. One big lesson in life I’ve learned is to have the awareness to park the car sometimes; to become still and enjoy your surroundings. Be present, take a breath, and know that everything will be okay.
This is how I learned that lesson: I dealt with multiple health issues in my early 20s, the most serious being a herniation in my spine. For two years, I dealt with pain until one day, I couldn’t place my feet on the ground without buckling and falling to the ground. I drove myself to work, crying from pain along the way from the striking pressure of pressing on the pedals; crawled to my office desk, and remained on the ground of my cubicle until my coworkers found me soon after and convinced me to go to the hospital. I dealt with pain, paperwork, and hospitals for the next two months. I go into more detail on this in an article that I can link here: (“Things I Learned When I ‘Died’”).
After my long-awaited spine surgery, I was to relearn how to walk. It took me a few weeks to get back to my normal speed and feel the soreness from surgery dissipate. I was in nowhere near the same amount of pain that I was in before surgery and I could feel my body healing, but something else was wrong. My body was getting better, but my mental state of being was not. I was still in a dark place, feeling negative and full of mental anguish believing surgery would take those things away from me too. I was sad, hopeless, and had no desires. I lost my job, my friends, and my will to enjoy life. I was at my lowest.
Having the consciousness and understanding of the misalignment between mind and body is what set in motion the series of events that eventually led to my genuine healing. After being vocal about my disappointment and feelings of imbalance to my cousin, she recommended a video for me to watch. In this video, Dr. Joe Dispenza explains what he does and why he does it to George Noory.
Dr. Dispenza was hit by a truck while running a marathon that shattered his spine. The surgery he needed had a high risk of failure, so he decided against it. He wanted to heal himself, so he imagined his spine realigning for the next 11 weeks. With his persistence in his mental efforts, he was able to heal. After that, he promised himself that he would spend the rest of his life studying the power of the brain and using that to help others heal. Something in my own brain must have clicked because I was amazed at how this was all possible. He spoke in the language of science which is what I understood best at that time in my life. I was amazed with his theories, data collection, and case studies behind his research. I suddenly knew how to heal. It was like the long-lost single piece of the puzzle was found and now the full picture could be seen. Everything clicked into place and made sense. It was as if I gave myself permission to love and accept. I was able to be gentle on myself and love every part of me. That was my first experience of universal love and it was powerful. That moment changed the course of my life forever and for the better. My journey of self-discovery had just begun, and I was very excited.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I DJ! For myself and for others. I must explain that I won’t play what you know, but you’re going to dig it regardless. I do it for the community, the sacred feeling of connectivity, and energy. My music can be my energy, my soothing space, my time to think.
I also host the Underground Connections Podcast which stands as a dynamic endeavor I actively collaborate on with esteemed members of my community. Together, we curate enlightening dialogues featuring individuals who wield significant influence within the underground music scene. Each guest we welcome has invested countless hours and unwavering dedication behind the scenes, all driven by the profound passion for music and pure love for the community. Bearing witness to their narratives of triumph over challenges is truly impactful, and their creative endeavors fueled by boundless energy are undeniably inspiring. Serving as one of the pioneers of the show fills me up with gratitude as it marks a one-of-a-kind venture within my community and allows me to infuse my unique personality and perspective into the experience.
Most of us don’t take the time to recognize or appreciate our own efforts, so let the following words of self-appreciation serve as a wellspring of affirmation:
I am most proud of myself. I am proud of my strength and willingness to keep going. I am proud to do the things I do because it brings me joy. I am proud of my determination to achieve what I want. I am proud of being able to brainstorm outside-the-box to generate creative ideas and solutions. I am proud of my kindness towards others, including animals and nature. I am proud of my empathetic nature. I am proud of the knowledge I contain and its ever-growing capacity. I am proud of standing my ground and knowing what is best for my well-being. I am proud of my ability in maintaining balance and deflecting unwanted energy. I am proud to be a light in other peoples’ lives. I am proud to have a positive influence on others. I am proud that I get to experience the many joys life has to offer me.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My family, first and foremost. My faith and outlook on life. And my friends and connections who support me in all ways. Without people believing in me, I would not be where I am today. I owe and share my success with the people around me. I am convinced that when we all support one another, there is no reason we can’t all succeed.
