Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Wilson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amber. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
After graduating college, I worked as the nightlife editor for a local magazine. Part of my responsibilities included writing about the latest restaurants, nightclubs and upscale events throughout Los Angeles. I enjoyed role tremendously, and it inspired me to eventually launch a blog that covered the culinary, nightlife and social landscape within L.A. and other travel destinations.
Has it been a smooth road?
Managing a blog is like running a marathon, rather than a sprint. It takes patience, commitment, self-discipline and a lot of perseverance.
If you’re the sole owner like me, the hardest part is that everything falls on you. No one’s going to get on your case if you don’t post on time or don’t finish a task. You also have to be extremely strategic with what you take on yourself, versus what you outsource. Having full control can be quite liberating, but it also warrants much responsibility.
Another challenging — but exciting — aspect is that the blogging landscape evolves so quickly. What worked well a year ago may not work today, or even in two months. There are always new blogging tools, resources, and strategies to discover. For example, when I first started the #WilsonsGuide blog, Instagram didn’t even exist.
Now, the social media platform is an integral part of my promotional strategy. You have to keep up with change and continuously refine and retune your craft. It’s truly a never-ending journey of learning new skills and techniques.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wilson’s “Where To” Guide Blog (a.k.a. #WilsonsGuide Blog) story. Tell us more about the business.
I created the #WilsonsGuide blog in 2010 as an online resource for where to eat, drink and be merry in Los Angeles and beyond. My blog features restaurant reviews, travel recommendations and interviews with inspirational trailblazers. I also offer marketing/advertising, writing/editing and professional consulting services for individuals, brands, and agencies.
My goal is to offer readers suggestions for invaluable, unforgettable experiences. It’s not about what’s new and trendy, whether it’s a low or high price point or any specific location — it’s simply all about what’s worth my readers’ time and money. We’re all busy, so if we have a moment for leisure, it should be for an experience that’s absolutely incredible.
Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?”
Bloggers can thrive in Los Angeles because there is so much to cover here — whether it’s fashion, music, tech or the culinary/social scene. Personally, I have an ever-growing list of places I want to visit, and as soon as I check one off the list, it feels like I’m adding ten more.
Regardless of the specific city where anyone starts a blog, I recommend having a vision for growth, networking with other talented individuals, spending time learning the craft, remaining professional in every situation and simply never giving up. There can be a lot of twists and turns, and blogging can be a lot of work.
But, the effort is all worthwhile, when at the end of the day, you see what was once a mere idea turn into reality.
