Meet Alissa Rubio of ACORPEM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Rubio

Alissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Alissa Rubio and I am 29 years old and just had my second daughter 4 months ago. I come from a family of Entrepreneurs and was taught the value of money very early on. Being brought up middle class taught me to be frugal and patient, since everything is earned, in time, through hard work and dedication. I attribute a lot of my drive to the fact that I was raised by very dominant and powerful women; who inspired me to never lose sight of who I am as an individual, apart from being a mother and a significant other. Along with teaching me the importance of making my goals and dreams a priority, I was also taught to be self sufficient which has truly impacted how I live my life.
Now that I am soon to graduate from the University of La Verne, with my degree in Rhetoric and Communications, and have been organizing and managing events for the past 11 years for various corporate companies, I decided to finally start my own business. I started by going over my business plan with my family members so they could provide as much constructive criticism as possible. It was important for me to speak my goals aloud in order to bring them to fruition. With the support and encouragement of my family I went for it! I got my LLC and began building my website and social media platforms. I then registered for multiple small business conferences and vendor expos as a way of networking and getting my name out there. In the events industry it is extremely important to get as much exposure as possible so as to expand your customer outreach. Sustainable and Healthy Relationships are key!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Success rarely comes easily. I have encountered a number of setbacks, hence the reason it has taken me 10 years to graduate from a 4-year university. There is a running joke amongst my family that I have the worst luck, which isn’t really funny but it is definitely true. If there is an easy route to success, someone or something, took extra care in ensuring I did not get on that train. Because of this, the biggest challenge for me, personally, has been staying optimistic in the face of adversity. It can be easy to fall into a negative space when things aren’t working out according to plan, so it has been essential for me to make sure I remain mentally adaptable to change in order to sustain my mental health. The most important thing I have found being a business owner, and just dealing with everyday challenges, is to stay fluid in our ever evolving world and allow ourselves some grace when facing and overcoming hardships. My faith has also played a large part in grounding me and helping me to remain humble and grateful for every blessing no matter how big or small. It is safe to say that focusing on the positive things in life allow for a better life experience and overall journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

By surrounding myself with successful and humble people I have been able to establish and maintain relationships with multiple vendors offering a variety of services. Together we are able to cultivate respectful spaces where innovation and passion run wild; which allow each event to over-exceed our client’s expectations; while maintaining our clients’ budget.
My ultimate goal is to establish a strong and honest legacy and build an empire for my family, not only to ensure financial stability, but also to put our mark on the world in a positive way; by inspiring others to take that leap of faith, required to follow your dreams, no matter what stage of life your at.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Right now it is highly important for companies to focus on their performance across Environmental, Social, and Governance criteria, aka ESG. In doing so they are able to gain more access and secure more capital amongst investors, stakeholders, and financial analysts; who use this performance data to evaluate the sustainability and social impact of an investment in a company. Doing well under the ESG criteria also allows for better partners and relationships as well as potential new talent. Companies are also able to maintain a better reputation and brand value which further advances the company’s success. Because ESG is so important and vital to a company’s success, I predict corporate event management to continue to be in high demand. An important aspect of event management is understanding the event goal; whether that is to educate its audience, promote an idea or product, raise money, enhance employee engagement, honor its employees, or increase client outreach. Understanding the reasoning for the whole event is the most important aspect of event management to ensure its success and effectiveness.
