Meet Alisha Maisano (Sabrowsky) of Lessons with Alisha Piano Studio in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Maisano (Sabrowsky).

Alisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never asked for this career. This career asked for me, actually! Back when I was about 17, I used to play piano at our church. I had been taking lessons since I was 5 and I was comfortable performing. A family there asked me if I would teach their child piano lessons. That one student was the beginning of everything for me. I discovered that I wasn’t only good at piano, I was good at teaching it. More than 10 years later, I find myself with a Bachelors in Childhood Education, a Bachelors in Music Education, and running a full studio of 35 students in Redondo Beach!

But most importantly, I’m teaching music today because someone else had the patience to teach me when I was little. I think that’s the main beauty of what I do every day, and it is the single thing that keeps me going lesson after lesson. I love taking what was given to me and sharing it with someone else.

I am a people person above everything else, and that is how I got my start. I love relating to people on a personal level and teaching one-on-one. I think I could have been successful teaching any subject in general, but I am so fortunate that it ended up being music because it is so relatable. I get to reach out to my students no matter what kind of a day they are having… some of them having the best day ever, some of them having a rough day, but all of them needing music just the same.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is currently getting a little bumpy as we speak! My husband and I now live in Culver City and I am trying to navigate the idea of either moving my business location or splitting my teaching time between both sites: Redondo Beach and Culver City. Finding a new student base in a new area is challenging and can take quite some time to build up.

Another exciting challenge that may be in my future is hiring some teachers to work alongside me!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lessons with Alisha Piano Studio – what should we know?
Although I began teaching only piano lessons, I’ve taken vocal training with my Music Education degree and now I teach voice lessons as well. Many students choose to do combined lessons, where we alternate piano and voice every other week, sometimes both in the same lesson if they are singing and accompanying themselves!

One major thing that sets us apart from other Music Lesson companies is that all school aged children get 45 minute lessons, not 30 minute lessons. I believe that Elementary Ages and up need these full 45 minutes to learn.

Another specialty we offer is the Wunderkeys curriculum! This curriculum is designed for preschool aged children, 4 years old and 5 years old.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I find success at the end of my long days when I feel that I have inspired my students. Like any teacher, I care deeply for the wellbeing of my students. I want music to be an outlet for them and something they can constantly come back to.

For the parents, I want them to be satisfied with the quality of my work, and I want them to see the results of that hard work. For this reason, I am a part of the Royal Conservatory’s Music Development Program so that parents have the option of letting students participate in annual exams. These exams test music performance, music theory, and musicianship.
