Meet Alia Pyatt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alia Pyatt.

Alia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began ten years ago when I went to my first comic convention. I went to WonderCon with a friend and we cosplayed Han Solo and Princess Leia. I was Han Solo. I knew then that cosplay was something I wanted to do forever! I started getting into the content creation side of things in 2018 and then it really took off during the 2020 lockdown. From that, I’ve been able to take creation to the next level and now do it full-time. I never thought cosplaying would get me to the point where I’m modeling, attending red-carpet premieres, and connecting with brands and creators I’ve looked up to for years!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth. Just like almost every other industry, Black women in the creator space have to work 3 times as hard for less recognition or pay than our peers. It’s a struggle and really beats at your mental health after a while. It can be hard not to compare myself to other creators. On top of all this, I also got married and divorced. My husband at the time tried to be supportive in my creative endeavors but ultimately didn’t like how much time I spent on it. The depression I went through after we split put me in a constant battle with taking time for self-care and taking time to create. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career if we were still together and I know I made the right decision. It still hurts though.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As both a cosplayer and content creator my life has so many parts and I love them all! As a cosplayer, I’m constantly researching new costumes and how to make them, making the costumes, planning solo shoots and collaborations with other cosplayers, and attending conventions or premieres in cosplay. My role as a content creator overlaps with my role as a cosplayer. It also involves connecting with brands to create content to market their products, attending events and movie screenings, and lots and lots of editing! My content covers a lot of different topics from cosplay, pop culture, theme parks, local restaurant and event reviews, fashion, and beauty. I also specialize in historical fashion and create a lot of content surrounding this. I think my nerdy interests and my historical fashion interests help set my content apart because a lot of it comes from one of these angles and gives viewers a new way to look at these experiences!

I’m really proud of my historical fashion work. It’s such a niche interest of mine and the fact that others want to hear about it as well makes me so happy!

What’s next?
While I do love what I’m doing now I am at the point where I am trying to figure out if this is what I want to do forever. I do love the front-facing content creator position but I also love behind-the-scenes stuff! I’d love the chance to work in the behind scenes side of entertainment, Public Relations, or even events. I know that whatever I decide to do I will continue making content because I love it, it just may take on a more hobby role instead of full-time job role.
