Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleksey Volchek.
Aleksey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After coming to LA to pursue Hollywood dream, I somehow found myself in the EDM clubs documenting nightlife. It wasn’t until I was back in school to pursue marketing did I start to seriously think about making my “party lifestyle photography” my signature thing that I do. There’s a lot of things one can do with photography now days – and I thought it would be very valuable to make party photos fun again! I call it radical party photography ha! But it’s just echoes of two Italian brothers in 1909 who perfected Futurist Photodynamism. I took the idea and instead of making the object move in front of the camera, I make my camera move round the object, creating amazing lights. To tell you the truth I miss it. It’s been awhile since I had a solid run of bookings in the nightlife industry. After finishing my uni – my attention has switched to how can I use my photography with marketing. I’m currently repositioning my brand. Thinking of dropping “shot me” and just simply go by my name: Volchek. If Trump can do it – Volchek can too! Watch out! 😉
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle in my EDM career was the fact that I never thought of it as something that people do for money. When money started to come – I had at the same time started school in Long Beach. The commute and weaning of the attention became the biggest obstacles. Currently the obstacle is the offer. It’s one thing to say you offer photography as a service. It’s another to offer “promotional content” as a service – that would be accomplished with one’s photography. All of a sudden, I’m not a photographer – I’m an entrepreneur. It all becomes about mind set. The things that aren’t working out outside is just something that isn’t working out on the inside. I’m the biggest obstacle for my success, for sure.
Volchek Shot Me – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m known for my party photography the most. You can say it’s a bit unorthodox. If you can imagine going to a club with your friends. Dancing, having fun in the group on a dance floor. And all of a sudden, some crazy guy with sunglasses a smile from ear to ear starts to dance with the group and out of nowhere – camera, flash, bam bam! Just like that the moment is captured. My photos come out “bitchin”. Together with photodynamism – it’s a photo that defines “epic fun”. Anyone looking at my photos know that where I was – it was fun, and everyone who wasn’t there missed out on some epic fun!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I became an official Avalon’s photographer for entire 2012-2013 years just months from committing to a journey as an EDM photographer.
