Today we’d like to introduce you to Ale Rubiera.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ale. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a Mexican cinematographer and still photographer, based in Los Angeles.
I graduated from Communication with a major in Film and Television in 2010 at Anahuac University of Mexico. By then, I realized what I most enjoy, and what I am truly passionate about in life are photography and cinema.
Since I was a kid, I always looked for the time to take pictures. It was something that allows me to appreciate the beauty that exists around me.
I began my professional career as a freelancer with production houses in Mexico City. From 2015 until now, I have worked as a Freelancer for NBC Universal, for the series produced by Telemundo International.
In 2016, I did a photography certificate at the Academy of Visual Arts of Mexico (AAVI).
In 2018, I studied the one-year conservatory program in cinematography at the New York Film Academy, New York City campus. Later on, in 2019 I moved to Los Angeles to complete a Master of Fine Arts in Cinematography at the New York Film Academy Los Angeles campus.
I am currently working as a cinematographer and still photographer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it has been tough, with a lot of ups and downs, especially as a woman cinematographer, I have been treated in sexist ways in some projects but I am lucky enough to be always supported by my family, friends and great people that believe in me to work with.
It has been a long path working hard until the doors started to be open, but at the same time, I enjoy the road and it has been totally worth it. There is nothing else I enjoy the most, that being a cinematographer. Whenever I am working on it, I forget about everything else and really enjoy it.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Cinematography is the art and craft of capturing a story visually by motion pictures. As a cinematographer or director of photography, my job is to always support the story in a visual way, every decision I make is to enhance the narrative of the story. I am really passionate about my job, and that allows me to always give my best. I like to challenge myself in every project, researching and bring ideas that can strengthen the director’s vision in every frame.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I think there are many special moments from my childhood but one of my favorites was going to the beach with my family on weekends. I enjoy a lot being in nature. Since I was a kid, I felt a lot of attraction about light, so growing surrounded by nature in open landscapes allowed me to appreciate the beauty of natural light.
