Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Walters.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Kennington was started in 1957, by Stan Tendler and Lee Condon I started working for Kennington in the
mid-nineties and continued until the 2014 when I took over the brand.
Prior to Kennington, I worked for various apparel companies, primarily in the O.C. surf industry brands like
Quicksilver, Rusty, Off Shore, Newport Blue taking their production into Mexico and Central America with
my company Production Plus.
Along that path I also took on clients such as Cross Colors, Marithe and Francois Girbaud, leading into knitwear
out of Italy for Nordstroms, and alike.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The garment road is full of potholes if not craters, it is embedded into the business. Garment assembly
is still a very labor intensive process, human error will always be a factor.
Finding living wage facilities is also a challenge, it is obviously not glamorous work, however it has provided
for many a family as we have worked in Sub-Sahara Africa, Belize, Mexico to name a few.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Pool Clothing Company?
The name Pool, has nothing to do with swimming, but rather the pooling of talents with each person or entity
performing the tasks that best suit their skills.
At pool apparel development, production, are our core activities.
Along with the brand we license, Kennington we also perform a variety of private label programs, including
various celebrity apparel lines.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Apprentice opportunities always seem to work best, especially if you can find a smaller company where varouis
opportunities are available so one can find their niche.
