Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Hooper.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aaron. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey into photography began by studying movement and the human form through dance. Upon graduating in 2012, I immediately joined a modern company in NYC and spent the following six years devoting my body and mind to movement. During this time, I began to explore the possibilities of capturing said movement or energy in time and space and picked up my first camera in 2014. I became enthralled with the possibilities of photography and the ability to express tireless amounts of work into one image or one collection and started to use much of my free time to explore the opportunities through my lens. In LA, I continue to use both my body and camera to tell stories. Mostly of humans existing in their own space and sometimes humans wearing nice things and sometimes humans wearing nothing; regardless, it is the story and movement which fascinate me still.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being an artist in NYC is never a smooth road. I worked multiple jobs until I was finally about to fully support myself through my art (which wasn’t until a year before I left). The struggle with art in a capitalist society is that what you want to create and what will make you money are usually two very different beasts. The journey is in finding a balance between being fed and being creatively inspired. One of the best things about moving to LA is finding that balance is a lot easier and I feel like my soul is back.
Transparencystudio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I shoot portraiture. I have tried to shoot landscape, travel, and architectural work and it just isn’t for me. I love shooting humans existing as humans and finding beauty in the simplicity of that. In NYC I shot for many publications including Paper Magazine, W Mag, and The New York Times and in LA I currently am working on a series to present in gallery in the coming year.
My work is unique through nothing other than my movement within the lens. There are only so many factors to alter when creating images (especially for someone who won’t touch photoshop typically), that the unique aspects must come from how I can create movement from a still frame.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
There is no definition for success in art apart from being creatively fulfilled and happy. Searching for anything other than that makes me crazy.
