Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Sopo and LifeFit Center @ The Beach. Below you’ll find edited excerpts of our interview with Emily.
Emily, can you tell us about LifeFit Center @ The Beach?
We are a health and fitness facility for adults age 49+ and CSULB staff & faculty of all ages. We also serve the CSULB campus as an educational laboratory and by offering outreach programs. We began in October 2012 with only 30 members and have grown to a membership of 500+ members. We are incredibly proud to serve our community, have a positive impact on others’ lives, and give young trainers the opportunity to learn. Our amazing team of passionate, dedicated fitness professionals has forged the way to a bustling facility that improves lives on a daily basis.
Has it been a smooth road?
Growing a fitness facility is never easy, especially with such a targeted membership demographic. Additionally, we have a fair amount of personnel turnover because most of our staff members are current students or recent graduates moving on to the next step in their journey. Several factors have helped us to succeed: our members, who constantly impress us with their dedication to their health; the support from the College of Health and Human Services at CSULB; our leadership team, who have a clear vision and truly love what they do; and a company culture that inspires us to put our hearts into our work.
What are your plans for the future?
We are excited that the LifeFit Center has grown from 30 members in 2012 to 530 members in 2016! We plan to continue to serve all of our members with top-notch fitness and educational programming. Additionally, we see a lot of potential with our Workplace Wellness program, which offers fitness programming to CSULB employees. We know that sitting at a desk all day is detrimental to our health, so we want to meet people where they are – at work. By making fitness programming accessible to CSULB employees, we give them the opportunity to improve their health, fitness, and well-being. We see this as a major trend within the fitness and corporate worlds, as more and more companies are looking for solutions to help their employees stay healthy.
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
At the LifeFit Center, our mission is: Community. Wellness. Education. As such, we feel like we’ve “made it” any time we are able to see our mission at work. This includes any time our members experience improvements in their health and wellness (i.e. being active with their families when they weren’t able to before or going off medication), any time a student takes a step forward in their fitness career as a result of their experience at the LifeFit Center, and more. We know that physical activity is hugely important to a person’s well-being, and we are thrilled to get to witness the power of physical activity on a daily basis.
