Life & Work with The Wizard Squendle

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Wizard Squendle.

Hi The Wizard Squendle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Five years ago, I hit my rock bottom. I was drinking every morning to ward off the shakes, driving into my dead-end job with a buzz on at 10am, late and presumably smelling of beer. I was borrowing money to support my drinking habit and barely keeping up with my bills, despite earning a decent salary. Something needed to change, and though I had been spiritually inclined before finally making the decision to get sober, this rock bottom pushed me to walk the walk and take control of both my spiritual and mundane life. I did get sober, and I did it alone. AA and other programs didn’t speak to me in any helpful way. I decided to navigate sobriety from a logical standpoint, learning everything I could about the alcohol industry, the chemical’s negative effects on the body, the psychology of addiction, and my own deep-seated trauma. It was through this process that I also came to terms with the rest of my life and my position in the world. As far as I could tell, I was producing nothing of value. I sat behind a desk in a cubicle moving numbers around a screen for 40+ hours a week in order to make my boss richer. I was helping nobody, experiencing no personal growth, and using my money to fund addictive habits and re-live trauma cycles. Something had to change. Through intense years of meditation and spiritual study, I realized that I was in complete control of my life. I could be whoever I wanted to be and show up every day as a person I would love. I decided to become a Wizard. Wizards are all over fiction and fantasy, and though they carry themselves with an air of mystery, they are always helping the less fortunate or less powerful through wisdom, knowledge, and a little magic.

My new perspective made the world seem like a joke, a playground where every person could show up in any costume they want to wear and not only survive but thrive in the process. I chose my name, Squendle, because every Wizard has a silly-ass name. Gandalf, Dumbledore, Merlin, etc. Because of the way my own brain works and because of my intense years of occult and spiritual study, I knew that I could help other people free themselves in this way. I started my Instagram page @thewizardsquendle to teach people easy ways to use magic and spirituality to change their reality. I found that I was an able translator of strange esoteric mumbo-jumbo; I could put these concepts into easily understood terms, finding metaphors and examples that resonated with modern lifestyles. From there, I learned that people wanted to work with me 1 on 1, and so my coaching and healing business was born. My struggles and studies inform my evolving practice and allow me to heal others and help them become free. I quit my job a year ago and moved to LA from Philadelphia. All of that is another story, and LA was an easy choice when I found out my closest friend and roommate was already considering a move out here. Now I’m a full-time Wizard, and I wouldn’t change that for anything in the world!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The largest barrier for me in establishing my business is the idea of charging people for spiritual work. It has taken a lot of inner healing to come to terms with the fact that I need to make money to survive and thrive and that my work deserves the prices I charge. The results speak for themselves, and my glowing reviews have further encouraged me to continue growing my business, but I still struggle with this aspect of my life. In a perfect world, I could do this for free and help people just because I love to do so, but unfortunately our system demands that we earn a living. There is also some difficulty with internet trolls and the dominant mentality that spirituality, witchcraft, and the occult are somehow evil and lead people down dark paths. This couldn’t be further from the truth, and I’m doing my part in dismantling this image of spiritual practices through my work. Sometimes you just need to block people and move on, though I have actually had some success in convincing certain trolls that their positions are rooted in conditioning and outdated understandings. One of them is now even one of my biggest followers/clients!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Primarily I am a spiritual life coach and spiritual advisor. I offer two standalone coaching sessions aimed at helping people through moments in their spiritual practices where they feel stuck and lacking progress. One of these sessions focuses on finding new modes of spiritual expression, and the other is focused on deconditioning – that is, finding the thought and belief constructs that keep people from realizing their potential and spiritual purpose. I also specialize in my own self-designed energy healing, which I can perform remotely. We are always expressing the state of our energy bodies in our thoughts and behaviors, and sometimes in order to get a clearer state of mind, we need to fix the stuck points in our energy systems. I use the elements, earth, air, fire, and water, and their symbolic correspondences, the physical body, communication/thought, passion/power, and emotions, to balance out the energetic field and establish a new baseline of power in the energy body and the state of mind of my clients. There is also my not-so-secret menu where I will perform other magical services for clients. This includes tarot readings, custom sigils, custom servitors (personal magical entities that assist us with any number of tasks), and channeled messages.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Within my work, I have dealt with many clients who are suffering in this new state of the world. People want to go back to restaurants and clubs with their friends. They miss bowling and going to the movies, dating and grocery shopping without fear. The biggest spiritual lesson I have learned is that because your mind, thoughts, and beliefs create your experience, the best thing you can do is find ways make yourself happy. If we can go inward and really look at the ways we can create our own joy, it makes this scary crisis that much easier. Personally, I have been using the time to connect with my own spiritual practice more deeply and focusing on the little things I can do within my space and safely in the outside world to keep myself happy and productive. It’s been such a hard time, and the main thing that really helps me is to go outside and get some sunshine. I take walks in my neighborhood or go to the beach or Griffith Park and stay far away from other people. Someday I would love to do 1 on 1 session in person with my clients. I would love to do meditation and activation spiritual retreats and workshops. But Zoom will do for now.
