Life & Work with Tenki of Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tenki

Hi TENKI, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started working as a child actor and kids’ model at the age of three. From 2010 to 2020, was a member of an entertainment group and made a major debut. Actively participated in a wide range of fields, including variety shows, movies, dramas, and radio programs. Successfully held a solo live concert at Nippon Budokan on the first day of the Reiwa era.

Afterward, transitioned to a freelance singer-songwriter to fulfill a childhood dream of “becoming an artist and performing original songs.” Currently, actively working in multiple roles as a singer-songwriter, talent, actor, and apparel producer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During my time in the group, I had the opportunity to perform in large-scale live concerts and appear on TV, dramas, and variety shows. However, I couldn’t pursue the genre of music I truly loved and felt constrained while singing. Although I had a stable income, I was afraid that my life would fall apart if I became a solo artist. Hiding my true passion while performing on stage was incredibly painful for me.

That’s why I decided to summon the courage to go solo—I didn’t want to stand on stage while hiding my feelings from myself or my fans anymore.

At first, I felt fulfilled because I was finally able to create and perform in the music genre I had always wanted. However, pursuing what I truly loved wasn’t easy. Some fans left because of the change in genre, and life became financially challenging. That struggle made me realize that I needed to study harder and create even better work.

Now, I’ve taken the leap to come to the U.S., a place I’ve always admired, to study music and improve my English. My English is still limited, which makes things difficult, and with the weak yen, life here isn’t easy either.

But I believe that losing in music doesn’t mean the end—quitting does. That’s why I’m determined to achieve something here and prove myself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I primarily work as an R&B singer in Japan. In addition to that, I’m also active as a talent, actor, and designer.

As a talent and actor, I’ve appeared in various Japanese dramas, movies, and variety shows. As a designer, I’ve worked on fashion brands and even held solo art exhibitions. I also have a chef’s license and have hosted dinner course events in the past.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to take action. I trust my instincts and challenge myself without fear of the potential downsides. I’m also proud of how much I value my relationships with my peers.

What sets me apart from others is that I’m not limited to just music—I’m able to take on a variety of different roles and explore multiple fields.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that all artists are risk-takers. No matter how well they sing or how great their songs are, there’s no guarantee of a hit. And without a hit, they can’t make a living. It’s like gambling. I’ve also taken that gamble and gone all-in on my life in America. Taking risks is very exciting and motivating.
