Today we’d like to introduce you to Talita Rezende
Hi Talita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Early Life in São Paulo
Talita Rezende was born on October 13, 1985, in the bustling city of São Paulo, Brazil. Her childhood was marked by a deep connection to sports, particularly judo. This early passion for martial arts laid the foundation for her future endeavors. However, life took a different turn after the birth of her first child, prompting her to pause her training.
Rediscovery of Passion at a Local MMA Gym
Talita’s hiatus from martial arts did not last long. She soon found herself drawn to a local MMA gym, where her coach, Helio “Tiozinho,” noticed her remarkable potential. It was Tiozinho who suggested that Talita try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a sport that would soon become her lifelong passion.
Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Age 20
At the age of 20, Talita made the life-changing decision to join Cícero Costha’s BJJ class. Her immediate affinity for the sport was evident. With a tenacious spirit and unwavering commitment, she dove headfirst into her training. Little did she know, this was just the beginning of her extraordinary journey in BJJ.
Rapid Advancement in BJJ
Talita’s progress in BJJ was nothing short of phenomenal. Within four months, she earned her blue belt—an achievement that typically takes years. Her rapid ascent continued as she advanced to purple belt just six months later. Such progress is a rare feat in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, underscoring her natural talent and dedication.
Tournament Victories and Brown Belt Achievement
Talita’s prowess on the mats translated into significant tournament victories. Her impressive performances in various competitions showcased her growing skill set and determination. In 2009, Talita achieved the rank of brown belt, marking another important milestone in her career.
Transition to the Ryan Gracie Team
Seeking to further hone her skills, Talita made a pivotal decision to switch camps and join the Ryan Gracie team. This move proved to be instrumental in her development as a martial artist. At the Ryan Gracie Academy, she trained under the expert guidance of Master Pitta and Celso Vinicius, finding a supportive and competitive female team that enhanced her performance.
The Pinnacle of Achievement – The 2011 Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu
One of the crowning moments of Talita’s career came in 2011 at the Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu (World Championship). Her exceptional performance secured her the most coveted medal in BJJ. The victory was made even more memorable as she was awarded her black belt by Master Pitta, with the added honour of having one of her heroes, Kyra Gracie tying the belt around her waist during the ceremony.
Prestigious Titles and MMA Success
Talita’s career is studded with numerous prestigious titles. She has been crowned World Champion, Pan American Champion, American Champion, and Brazilian Champion, among many other accolades. Talita’s excellence extends beyond BJJ to MMA, where she has secured several wins in one of the premier events, Bellator.
Life in Los Angeles and Continued Dedication
For the past few years, Talita has called Los Angeles, California, her home. Here, she continues to train, compete, and teach, sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with the next generation of martial artists. Her relentless dedication serves as a source of inspiration and motivation for the entire martial arts community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For an athlete it is never easy, for a Brazilian athlete you can multiply this difficulty. We didn’t have sponsorships, the money was barely enough for food, supplements I only had when a brand sponsored me. But the love for sport has always been greater and today I’m just reaping the fruits of a great job
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an athlete and jiu jitsu teacher, black belt 3 degrees. I won almost all the most important jiu jitsu titles, I fought mma in one of the biggest events in the world Bellator. Nowadays I dedicate myself to jiu jitsu competitions, classes and seminars. I love giving self-defense classes to women and something amazing to be able to teach a little more than I learned and encourage them. I’m very proud of my trajectory.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
First, I love teaching jiu jitsu. I love being with my family and friends so we always have a lot of meetings here at home, especially on dates that are special for us Brazilians. I don’t think it’s priceless to be with those we love. And today I can be with my family and friends doing cool things, like parties, dinners, trips
