Life & Work with Synder DePass

Today we’d like to introduce you to Synder DePass.

Synder DePass

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We have been working together designing and building furniture for the better part of a decade however, this studio is a new endeavor for us. We both sold our interest in a larger, high volume, wood shop last year to focus more on design, expand on the materials we work with and build a new brand. We are currently exploring what is it like to build everything ourselves. Touching every piece of wood and trying to answer the question, “What is that you would do if you have the freedom to do anything?”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting from scratch has been a lesson in patience. It took us months to find a space that suited our needs and then months after that to source tools and materials to be able to move forward with the design process. The pieces that we are building can take weeks from start to finish and only then can we photograph it and put it out into the world. It is a slow and arduous process. It is a labor of love that we are so excited to show people, but the only way we can do it is to take our time and maintain focus in the face of impatience.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are a furniture studio that embodies a blend of creativity, craftsmanship and passion. Our shared experiences in skateboarding and music have fostered an inquisitive and collaborative approach to design which is shown through the pieces we make. We’re best known for making heirloom quality dining tables and we’re excited to apply our attention to detail to other types of pieces and projects in the future. We are proud to have created a space that gives us the freedom and ability to take a concept to a finished piece of handmade furniture here in Los Angeles.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
It’s always nice to reach out. I think most in our industry are willing to sit down and talk about their experiences getting started, what worked and what didn’t. Once you realize you’re part of a community, it’s easier to reach out with questions or comments. Being curious and friendly can still open a lot of doors in Los Angeles. It certainly has for us.
