Life & Work with Sophie Clark of North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Clark

Sophie , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Food Styling about 10 years ago. Before I started, I never even knew this was a career. I’ve always loved cooking and entertaining and presenting food in beautiful ways but never put it together that I could do it for work. I was lucky enough to start assisting a friends mom who did prop food for tv sitcoms. Through working with her, I was able to make connections with other assistants and move from prop food to styling food for Food Network shows. Each job brought me new connections and since I started all those years ago I’ve styled cookbooks, editorial shoots, and commercials, developed recipes for cookbooks, worked on tv shows, and was even part of a team nominated for an Emmy.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Food Styling is a free-lance job so there have definitely been bumps in the road. Lots of days wondering if work would come but somehow things always work out.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Food Styling can have lots of different facets, so two jobs are rarely exactly same. My favorite kind of job is when I get to develop recipes for a cookbook and then get to style the cookbook. I love being part of the whole process and I really enjoy collaborating with an author to create a beautiful book.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the restaurant scene. We have so many great spots and I love trying new places. What I like least is the traffic haha. especially after a long day at work.
