Life & Work with Sheila Karbassian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Karbassian.

Sheila Karbassian

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been an artist for most of my life. I attended a high school for visual arts in Iran. Received my BA in Graphic design and moved to the US in 1996 and worked as a GD in New York City for seven years and began painting around 2001. I stopped painting regularly around 2004 to raise my daughter.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I returned to my painting practice after my husband died from a sudden heart attack in 2011. I’d become a widow at 39 and felt quite lonely in my experience that’s when I picked up the brush and canvas again. This time, my practice was more than just creating. It was therapeutic and a necessity for my overall well-being. Through this practice, I found joy and purpose once more, as well as a healthy way to process complex emotions. Now, I had a thriving art practice and am part of the wonderful artist community of 18th Street Art Center.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I see every single piece of my work as a self-portrait reflective of my dreams, ideals, experiences, and, above all, my hope.
