Today we’d like to introduce you to Servando Guevara.
Hi Servando, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Servando Guevara, I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I am a Mexican and Nicaraguan Latinx queer artist who has been doing makeup since the age of fifteen. My goal to myself as a makeup artist/ hairstylist would be to see my makeup on a billboard in New York like an ad campaign. I want every makeup that I design to be complementary to each client. You don’t need makeup to feel beautiful because beauty is a feeling from within.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Growing up in a Hispanic/traditional home, self-expression and having a curiosity for feminine things such as playing with makeup was very frowned upon. I did not feel the amount of love and support that I have now with my family. I have changed career paths about a handful of times. I am pursuing makeup as my career because my interest for it comes naturally. If a challenge ever arose with makeup, I usually always overcome those obstacles because at the end of the day, this is my passion.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
On my every day to day life, when I am not freelancing, I work as a beauty advisor at a Ulta Beauty. I work on the sales floor and help assist people with their makeup and skincare needs and recommendations. I work for sales and I am trying to work my way up to become a prestige makeup artist and work with big-name brands like Fenty Beauty, R.e.m Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics, etc. when I freelance, I specialize in the fashion and editorial beauty. I really enjoy Avangard and vibrant colors when I have the creative freedom to do so. Perfecting and mastering a good base application that feels lightweight while maintaining coverage is key in the beauty world. The more raw and unfiltered content I create, the more it shows the real power of makeup. I am most proud of a recent collaboration that I am doing that is top secret until further notice for it being my first ever magazine publication as an assistant. I am a recent graduate from Makeup Designory (M.U.D) out in Burbank, California. I feel excited and confident that I am doing what is best for myself and continuing to follow my dreams.
